Free Range Chicken

How easy is it to buy free range chicken in Adelaide these days? Do most supermarkets/butchers stock it or do you have to visit more specialist shops?

I had to give up my pet bantams 3 weeks ago and couldn't bear to eat chickens that hadn't had a decent life.

Hiya,

I recently asked this question on adbrits as I'm trying to go all organic (trying.....:wubclub:)

I've been told the best place to go is Willunga Farmers Market on a Saturday (south- Aldinga way) and Central Market in the city. Theirs also some organic/free range shops in the hills.

Most supermarkets do Free range chooks. I've found our local Foodland (Hallett Cove) to have the most consistent supply and best choice so far although I would rather buy them at a market or farm. The central market has a stall called Vegas Chicken, which is good for stuff although they sell out quickly on Saturdays. Barossa fine foods are also great for free range meat and have a stall in the Central market too.

Have to say I haven't eaten chicken for a while as we are currently researching backyard chicken keeping and it feels weird to be buying them to eat :arghh:. And as an ex-veggie it's often been a struggle for me to eat meat despite two pregnancies that created huge cravings - hence why I now eat it! The kids are desperate for some as they are great pets apparently and we want to have some 'proper' free range eggs.

Would be great to hear from anyone else who keeps chooks and hear which breed you have and what they're like as pets for small kids (youngest child 2).

Thanks

Dette :)
