My point was correct I am afraid.
There is no point, if there was they would only make HD boxes. :daydreaming:
When arriving in a new country, there is no point in spending money on something that you wont get the benefit from.

There wasn't any point, no too long ago, but, as some of the channels are now HD only (e.g. One), I would still recommend purchasing a HD stb, especially for those interested in sport. As you can get a HD box for $60, maybe less, I reckon it's worth it...
Agreed.

Okay I have a had a read through this thread and understand that the UK Freeview Box will not work in Oz. What about a Sky HD box and Sky+ box? I suspect that they will not work either, can anyone confirm please?
First thought about migrating 2004 (home for me) not the wife or kids. Again 2008. Decision now made -Kids citizenship forms sent 06/05/11 -Kids Australian Citizens from 23/05/11 -Mine and kids Australian Passports applied for 31/05/11 -Kids Passports arrived 09/06/11 -My Passport arrived 10/06/11. OH Visa granted 02/02/12
Following on from my post above - I have a surround sound system through my DVD player we don't really watch DVDs but may do in Oz due to the poor TVWhat i need to know is it worthwhile bringing my surround sound system (speakers and DVD) or would it be more advantageous to buy an AV receiver and use my speakers from the DVD surround system? Or will the speakers from my DVD System not be compatible with a new AV Receiver?

Hi Misplaced.
With regard to the DVD surround system; if you're happy with the sound and picture it provides, definitely bring it but try to find out either if it's already multiregion or can be modified.
The SKY equipment is a more difficult question. I have a feeling the standard Foxtel boxes are simply rebadged SKY boxes but the Foxtel HD box is, or at least looks, completely different. The remotes are still the same though. Perhaps someone on the forum has already brought one over? It might be worth starting a separate thread for that one; if you get a response, let me know and I'll add in the info.
EDIT. Just googled it; question has been asked (on the Brisitsh Expat Discussion forum) and the consensus is that the remotes will work but the boxes won't.

will you not have to return your sky+ box back to sky? I know foxtel hound you constantly when you cancel the subscription to get their box and handset back. In fact, they are still bugging us 6 months after we returned it! BTW foxtel is nowhere near as good as sky, there are only half as many channels and never anything worth watching on them anyway!! $100 a month down the drain, we cancelled ours and don't miss it one bit and we wouldn't be without sky in the UK!!!
I saw a multi region dvd player yesterday in Dick Smith for $19!!!! Also they are giving them away free along with all the cables you might need and a screen cleaner if you buy a 32" tv!!!!
As far as I understand once you have had the Sky+ or Sky HD box for 12 months or more it is yours. As when you cancel the subscription you can still use them for getting digital channels - they don't ask for them back.

I was under the impression you had to buy the the SKY HD box...you see a fair few for sale on eBay...
From what I've seen, Foxtel looks like a very expensive option for limited return. There's quite a bit worth watching on Aus TV but you really need to hunt for it. UKNOVA is a great option for those missing UK shows.

If you have one sell it before you leave the UK. Although it will work over here you can't buy the pods.
As for HP Inkjet printers either bring a spare set of genuine cartridges and keep getting them refilled or get rid of your printer before leaving UK AND buy an aussie one.
HP's website will say you can buy aussie cartridges and phone hp support who will talk you through the steps to change the region coding, but if you have cartridges which are not genuine HP then the process will not work as unlock code generated by a long complex process will be invalid.
I know this from experience.
My UK printer which printed and scanned fine on refilled UK cartridges is after an hour and a half on the phone to HP support now just a large paperweight.
