Rentals that takes dogs/Kenneling

Hi everyone

Fairly new to this hope some one can help.

We are hoping to emigrate in June, however we have a dog and have some issues we hope someone can help answer.

We are looking at various options but not bringing Ben (the dog) is not one of them.

My concerns are as follows:

  • alot of rentals say no dogs and our dog is quite big and boisterous (cross Airedale/Collie)
  • we will probably have to leave him all day alone (at the moment some one comes home at lunch time to let him out) and we are not sure if he will bark all day and annoy the neighbours
  • we currently attend dog training classes and we are not sure what is available in South Adelaide area.

We wondered if day kenneling would address some of these issues, this is where you drop the dog off in the morning and then collect at the end of the day. When we were over last October we were struggling to find kennels close to where we may live (Port Noarlunga area). Does anyone know of any kennels that are local and would offer this.

Also does anyone do dog training/socialisation, Ben has done the basics (he is disobediant so is definitely not going to advance) plus agility which he loved and flyball.

We are not fanatical dog owners but he was a rescue dog and I will not let him be 'dumped' again.

thanks

Tracey

Hi

There are 2/3 or more dog obedience clubs in Morphett Vale area just north of Noarlunga most of which also do agility. Don't know where the flyball clubs are yet but they are about! Obedience here is a big thing as a certificate allows you to claim a discount on your dog licence so don't think you would have any problems finding a suitable club.

There are boarding kennels in Woodcroft and the RSPCA at Lonsdale but I don't know if they take day boarders.

We also thought that we would have problems with ours barking but she never makes a peep!

Good luck

thanks for the quick reply, it's quite a relief, at least I can enquire when we arrive.

Ben is a lovely dog, and full of energy so we don't want to keep him 'locked up' so

dog clubs are a good way to get out with him and exercise him in a social environment.

I have to admit he hasn't done agility for at least a year and only tried flyball for a few months, but he certainly enjoyed the exercise so I hope to start it up again.

I hope you don't mind me asking but have you ever used the kennels in Australia and if so how did you find them? I was enquiring about day kenneling as it may make it easier to get a rental property when we arrive if we are not leaving the dog unsupervised during the day. Also did you have problems getting a rental property when you arrived with your dog?

Sorry about the questions but it's one of the major things worrying me at the moment.

thanks again

Hi Tracey

Re Flyball, funnily enough I picked up a leaflet on that at last years Adelaide Show and it's still on my notice board so I know there are Flyball Training Contacts at Dover Gardens, Gawler and Para Districts. When you arrive and know where you'll be living, contacts Dogs SA on 8349 4797 for local details.

Try and get some references for your dog before you come (from people that like him!) - that may help when you apply for a rental to swing things your way. Also you could try offering a few months rent in advance - that sometimes sways the agents

Good luck

thank you that is very helpful advice, I will definitley followup on that as he enjoyed it once he got used to the ball pinging out of the box!

The references point is also very useful we will definitely take that one up.

thanks again

Hi Tracey,

The Lonsdale RSPCA had doggy day care which will be ideal for you. Not sure how much it is but the nightly rates are good so I expect it will be quite reasonable.

Hi Tracey

When we rented we assured them that our dog would be kept outside and also explained that she wasn't a puppy and so hopefully wouldn't do too much damage.

Don't worry too much about the neighbours because just about everyone has a dog here.

When are you arriving in June? We leave our rental in Happy Valley in May and we have a dog so the owner may be willing to take someone else on with a dog?

Anyway good luck.

Bark Busters are pretty good with boisterous dogs, they come to the house and work with you and the dog to help nip the problem in the bud. There are some clubs where you can take the dog with you also for sessions with other dogs, two that I know of are at the Victoria Park Racecourse, and also there's another down by the Adelaide Airport at West Beach, as these tend to be recreational events these are both nice areas to have a visit to, I am sure there are other working dog clubs in the south though. Also you may want to consider a dog walker coming to the house during the day to work with him. I guess at least coming from Britain he doesn't have to go into quarantine which is great. He will settle okay, but remember just as you are being uprooted and confused he is going to be also, just give him heaps of attention, he'll love walks on the beach etcetera, just reassurance that you are going to all stay together is all he really needs. All the best.

Thanks for the tip, you are right as Ben isn't a puppy he is less likely to destroy things. Also our intention is to leave him outside most of the time so we hope this plus the day kenneling at the RSPCA Lonsdale will swing it for us.

We hope to arrive end June mid July so if they haven't got anyone lined up we could be interested. Would you mind PM me details of the property, size, rent etc. As I also have to boys to house as well!!

Thanks again

thanks for the info that will be very useful. We currently do training with Ben and he seems to enjoy it, so we would like to do something similar when we arrive.

When we arrive he will need to be in quarantine for 30 days, but as he has been kennelled previously we hope he will cope with it OK.

Thanks for the lead on Lonsdale, we looked them up on the website and they are very reasonable so we will definitely be looking at this initially once we all have jobs (she says optimistically).
