Realistic IT Salary?

Hi.

 

I've just seen this link on the PomsInOz site.

It shows salaries at Mar 09 of IT professionals from PeopleBank Recruitment

This in itself could be very useful for anyone looking to come out to Oz. (Including us - hubby is an IT Manager!)

However, seeing as a number of people on this site have said that Adelaide is not really an IT city, and how difficult it seems at the moment for IT people to find jobs, (along with everyone else), I just wondered if anyone thought these salaries were a true reflection of what you could earn here? (Or are they living in cloud-cuckcoo land?)

It says an experienced IT Manager in Adelaide salary should be around $150k basic - This seems a great salary to get; if you can manage it.....!!!!

Well according to this scale my O/H should be on over $20,000 more than he is getting. It could be way off the mark or maybe its his company ....which wouldn't surprise me

From what I've seen since I've been here, an IT Manager will earn approx. $70-$100k per year.

depends upon age expereince etc, but expect to have to prove yourself in the local market ...

According to this my partner should be earning another $30,000!!! I think use it as a guide, but not sure how accurate it is. I think it depends on the industry you work in as well.

This article was in today's job paper regarding the current IT job situation.

 

There were about 5 IT jobs in today's paper, the most I have seen for months. A lot of IT positions are advertised through agencies though as well.

 

I know of 2 IT people that secured jobs straight away, one person was offered 3 positions in the period of 2 months so the jobs are out there, but probably depends on your skill set as well.

I was lucky, I managed to land a job in IT before I arrived.

That said, I installed a skype phone, and sat-up most nights emailing and phoning..... so you make your own luck

 

Unfortunatley, I got finished up after 8 months, but managed to find a new position and start within 5 weeks.

 

The jobs are out there, but you have to expect to have to chase-up far more than you would in the UK.

 

I have a rule of thumb.......

100 Cvs, 50 Phone calls, 5 Interviews = 1 job......

I was in Adelaide in may and got told that i would be lucky if i got an interview in the next 3 months of a few agencies to which i decided to save my money and come back to the uk for a while as i was on my own. Now i am ready to move back to Australia as it appears that the market for IT work has increased again.

 

Is that true?

I'm a software developer, specialising in .Net, SQL and Mobile technologies. I have been here a month and have had interviews with agencies (Hudson etc...), and 1 position so far. Been applying for suitable roles as they appear - this seems to be 1 or 2 a fortnight.

 

Not heard anything more from the agencies since first contact. They tell me it's a little quiet, but that's normal in Adelaide.

 

I guess it's just a matter of waiting for something to come up - and if not, there's always the police force as there is no minimum age and they pay you while you train lol!

where r u up now ? did u get job or still looking for, I have same background but most of my work is on Database connectivity and a lot with Crystal reports. do u think OCA and Microsoft certifications will help to get jobs ?

If you are a techie is definately easier to get an IT job than if you are an IT manager. My friend who emigrated in Sept is on $70K and could have had many jobs. Manager jobs seem to be around $90K if you have say 10 years experience. Change management, service desk management and project management are the areas where managers seem to have the most opportunities. I don't really fall into service/project and depite 19 years IT experience and fantastic refs have only had one interview...and they didn't even bother informing me of the outcome - shoddy to say the least...and you should have seen the stuff about their fantastic values and behaviours ...I don't think ! I'm living in hope the New Year will bring some more opportunities.

Thank you for your response! I was waiting for it, What i I do .net certification before coming, I am not into management, can do work in software development, but I have teaching experience at undergraduate level + programming expereince in total I have 6 years experience.

 

I am also giving SQL exam and PL/SQL exam to get Oracle certified Associate certificate. I hope it will be useful to me

 

please let me know what can be done further to improve job chances
