Just to let all of you coming over know that there is work out there.

We have been here two weeks today and seemed to hit the ground running. Had houses and cars sorted within a week and after about 5 days here I was starting to worry about getting a job.

Our daughter started school this Tuesday and we came home to start ringing companies. I make soft furnishings for interior design companies and Ian is a track and blind fitter.

The first three companies we rang all were interested and today is thursday and I have done my first day at work.

Ian has interview for next wk.

So don't worry there is work out there. We just contacted companies direct and they were all reallly helpful:)

Hi,

Thanks for the positive post !

How many find they had a job offer before going over ? We are planning to make the move early next year. If all goes well we will have our visa around Jan........... we hoping my husband will have a job before going........ are we being realistic ?

Well done with your job and good luck to your OH for next week.

Hi, employer sponsored visas apart (obviously!) I'd say it's really unlikely to find work before moving out unless it's a really specialised role that's hard to fill. Most employers simply don't want to know unless you're already here.

Good thread to read! My hubby (carpenter) thinks he will try and get employment before we get there, and I have tried to tell him that the chances of that happening are very slim....seems I was right.......again lol;)

Always great to read positive posts on the work front, well done guys! We are going over in Jan, are being realistic and don't think we will gain employment before we go, however have sent some emails just to see what kind of feedback we get and send feelers out and have had some really positive responses which i suppose is a start. Also gives you an idea of what positions you can apply for with the qualifications you have and what companies to ring when you arrive.

Some companies have been really quick to reply and said as soon as you get here phone us etc. Obviously you don't know whether they are just saying this and they cannot guarentee there will be positions available but like i said it's a start. Good luck with the interview.

Good to read a positive post on finding work. Thanks for sharing this. I guess also it depends on your line of work too.

My oh works in IT and he did get a telephone interview with the university of adelaide, but unfortunately due to timing of this interview he didnt get asked back for a 2nd interview which would have been done via video conference. We dont know if they felt he wasnt suitable or because we said the earliest we could be out was the New Year, because they have written back and said when we are in Adelaide to contact them and let them know.

Anyway, anything is possible, just keep trying but all in all I think the work front certainly in Adelaide is looking more positive than the beginning of the year.

Good to all looking for work.

Hiya

I arrived this week and I've started to get a bit worried about finding a job as I was employed in local govt in UK. It seems as though I can't do that here on a 475. Will have to pursue other options I guess.

Congrats on the job....good to hear some positive outcomes.:)

Hi,

It depends on the type of contract. You cannot work for the Government on a permanant contract but they will employ you on casual or temporary contracts. I'm on a 475 and have been working for the Gov with families SA since April, initially on a casual contract which next week will be a temporary contract. Not ideal but still gives you an option and will do until permanent residency status secured.. I've seen temporary contract jobs advertised in Gov ranging from 3 months to 2 years, co all's not lost:D

Hey hopefull.

That's reassuring to know! I work with families and young kids in the UK, hoping to do something similar. I'll certainly keep my eyes out on the government web sites. :cute:
