Can anyone explain how sick days work?
My husband started work for Government of SA a couple of months ago. When explaining his benefits package they made a point of saying he had 10 days sick as well as his holidays. This was made to look like a benefit however he is a bit reluctant to ask about it incase it is just the same as taking a sick day in the UK.
Does anyone know if a sick day can be taken for a child or other family member being ill or if it could be taken for days when we struggle with childcare.
Also if a sick day is taken does this affect your employment record as it does in the UK and is it something future employers would ask to see.
well if you are good its another 10 days holiday, or depending on your EBA or award you can cash them out yearly or when you retire etc etc. Normally one sick day no certificate is required but if having 2 or more together you will need one, same if b4 or after a public holiday. If a family member is crook, depending on the doctor, the doc might want to see the member. Its always best to get a certificate though, does it affect your record, mate Australia is the king of sickies.
Some company's acrue your sick pay, so it rolls up every year, but some will not let you take this as a final payment when you leave.
Not all do 10 days, you can usually take carer's leave, and the berevment on top.
Has for how many sickies you take well once you go above the number i guess some company's would start to look, but it is an Aussie way of life.
SA Govt doesn't allow for sick days to be used for family members or for dr's appts, but if he gets a copy of the rules re leave (on the govt intranet under HR), there are other options in place for carer's leave etc and he probably, depending on the level of his job, gets flex-time as well, so can bank some overtime as flex and use for personal things.
