Hi,

 

To teach in a TAFE, the equivalent of an FE college in the UK, you need to have minimum of an Australian Teaching Certificate (Certificate of Teaching, Training and Assessment). A UK one is not enough unless you also have the UK A1 Assessor's award as the cert here includes assessing and it doesn't in the UK. You can RPL your UK qualification if you have it but will probably still be required to do some extra stuff to satisfy the college that you are competent.

Unfortunately most RTO's are closing as the government pulled the pin on a lot of trades. So no, there aren't many jobs out there.

No, i don't have a teaching cert but I have teaching experience.

 

May I know how long does it take Australian Teaching Certificate (Certificate of Teaching, Training and Assessment)?

Cert IV takes is about 3 months but you only do 2-3 days in a classroom over that period. The work is there depending on what you choose to teach. If it isn't on the SOL then there won't be many jobs in that field. Take a look on the TAFE website.

So, after completed the three months cert, I can teach in TAFE, correct me if I am wrong.

Its assessment based so you do most of the work at home/workplace. You will need to gain your Cert IV in Training and Assessment (TAA) when you get here. Once you have qualified in your TAA yes you will be able to teach in a TAFE or RTO (Registered Training Organisation).

But you also need the required equivilent qualification in whatever field you wish to be training in.

 

I didnt discover this until i had done my cert iv (at TAFE over 2 sesmesters 1 day a week) as i never collected my 706/1 706/2 certs but then did a degree i didnt bother to go back for whats classed as 'lesser' qualifications.

I can train/lecture up to degree level in hospitality and do food/beverage/chef classes but not do exclusive chef training as i dont have the required certificate.

If you already have qualifications in a specialist area (eg: Marketing in your case), it would be worth sending your resume/curriculum vitae to a range of registered training organisations (RTO) to see if they had anything coming up.

 

Most colleges require the Certificate IV (as mentioned previously) BUT will, if they need you, take you on (usually part time/casual in the first instance though) to teach, and then expect you to gain the CIV while you're with them.

 

Don't be too put off by comments regarding closing RTO's ... in Adelaide it's one and only one (and their demise was no big surprise to anyone in the education/training field!)

Actually no you are wrong, my hubby's school is closing, loses his job next week. The place he was at before has closed and he knows of others that are also closing or making redundancies as a result of the government pulling the skills off the SOL. In his case it was hospitality but also hairdressing RTO's are closing too. That particular school mentioned above was just one of many corrupt RTO's in Adelaide. It's happening everywhere and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The overseas students sign up to learn a subject, they do not attend many classes because they get jobs driving taxi's, expect to pass and eventually they do pass even though they have not done anything. It's a "tick and flick" industry. He has seen it first hand.

 

As Business Studies is still one of those subjects being taught at some RTO's, there might be work out there. Good luck with your search.

Do you know where to obtain the list of RTO?

 

I only know about there are two colleges in Adelaide which offer transition program from diploma to degree, they are linked to UniSa and UA.

 

If I can get a job in either of this places, will be a good start.

I am currently working as a Trainer on a casual basis and this is my first Trainer position in Australia, so even though it is casual it is an excellent way for me to get my foot in the door and get some valuable Australian training experience to back up my qualification.

Does it mean that after completed the course we will be able to work as a trainer? I noticed the duration of the course is not long but spread out in few months. Just wonder why the course been structured in that way?

For Trainer positions it is a requirement to have the Cert IV TAA. Different RTO's will structure their Cert IV TAA sessions differently, at TIME I did my TAA in the evening (as I was working fulltime in the day) once a week and it took approx 5 months to complete, but there are other daytime options. Looking at TIME's website I think the evening option is $2,500, you will find the course cheaper but I believe you get what you pay for and in my experience I received excellent training and having the qualification was one of the factors which has enabled me to get a job as a Trainer.

Moosh, Sorry to hear that .... must be hard for you

Private RTOs that teach a range of subjects that don't 'sit' togehter, ie: hairdressing, cookery, and anything else that is currently on the skilled migration list are likely to be at risk when that changes.

If you're in McLaren Flat, have a chat to TAFE Noarlunga Hospitality as their cookery program is going well ..... don't know if they need anyone but worth a phone call ........ the public provider is often a safer option for both staff and students, but can be hard to get into for both too.

Also the global financial crisis has not helped, the colleague I mentioned before runs her own training business but corporate clients have cut back on training so she took a fulltime Trainer and Assessor job at the RTO I am working at, although she now says she is getting phone calls from the corporate sector so things may be picking up in that area.

With regards to training material it is probably a mixture. I have been asked to run some workshops for the learners and I am creating my own resources but for the main units they are studying we have pre-prepared training materials purchased from an external source.

 

It is important to get the Cert IV TAA or else you will struggle to even get an interview unless it is a particular area they have a shortage in and will be willing to take you on while you studying for it.

 

In my case, I had the TAA qualification and additional qualifications, the work experience and was in the right place at the right time, I spotted the advert on a Friday and applied more or less as soon as it came on seek.com.au and they rang me a few hours later to come for an interview on the Monday and I started on the Thursday.

 

I have to add I have been here just over 3 years now and it has taken this long for things to start slotting into place workwise.

It will depend on your visa. I started lecturing while on a student visa (post grad) and ended up being employed full time ... that was 5 years ago and I'm still there. It is often very casual to start with, ie: not many hours a week and only paid in semester and when you are actually teaching (ie: not all RTO's pay for prep) Some materials provided but it depends on the course/what you are teaching etc and you are usually able to add your own insights etc but will need to meet the curriculum requirements. Hence the advice re the Cert IV is helpful as having this and an understanding of training packages (aka curriculum) really helps.
