Hi there

Just starting to get the ball rolling..moving over in the summer.

Anyone in the HR or Recruitment field out there? if so can you think of anything that I should do, learn or anything that would be beneficial prior to coming over, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

How is the job situ and the moment....hopefully HUGE demand for HR professionals!!!

Thanks all

Sharon

Hi Sharon

Wouldn't do any harm to contact AHRI in Adelaide and see what meet ups the local group have on for around the time you arrive. It's not essential to be a member of any HR institute to get a job here, but they do provide valuable networking opportunities.

It's a steady market especially at the HR officer/consultant/advisor level (Adelaide's obviously not a major head office city, so don't expect plenty of high end opportunities like you might get in Sydney or Melb). When more senior roles do get advertised, they often attract around 100 applicants, so there are a lot of experienced/senior practitioners competing for relatively few openings.

Not too sure about recruitment - especially if that's in an agency envionment - but I imagine it's a fairly similar situation.

Good luck

Jim

My wife is in HR. She has 17 years experience in Labour Hire and general office management. She's finding it difficult to get a job, but a lot of that is due to the fact that she can't work full day because we don't have anyone to look after our child

One the things that keeps popping up is MYOB - the online HR/Payroll programme. The vast majority of programmes demand experience with it. Good luck

MYOB is an accounting and payroll system rather than a HR system, similar to say SAGE in the UK. A hugh amount of office positions ask for MYOB skills.

I worked as a HR Officer in the UK and had CIPD qualifications. However I have studied the Diploma in Human Resource Management in Adelaide as it covered workcover and industrial relations and awards and agreements which are different to the UK and I also found it very useful studying with Australian HR people and learning about the way things are done over here. My feeling is that in a lot of ways HR is behind the times compared to the UK and there is still a feeling that if an employee speaks to HR they are a trouble causer and in some sectors unions are still quite strong. As a result of this, I chose to move into a training role with a HR focus instead of a traditional HR position.

I studied my Diploma of HRM at TIME, link below.

T.I.M.E - T.I.M.E Training Innovation Management & Enterprise | Home

I have also studied my Cert IV TAA with them as well.

I thought their level of training was excellent and gaining the qualifications has helped me tremendously.

thanks alot for this Jessica - I've just had a look at their site is it right that the course is only 9 days long?

I did the course in the evening, 3 hours once a week, for approx 5-6 months but I know they daytime option is also available. For each of the units you study you have to complete an assignment and some of them are quite involved. It is a good course and the Trainer is excellent and gives you lots of information and 'real life' HR examples which is good when you want to gain an insight into Aussie HR.
