Hi

Sorry no one has replied. I think on the whole work is pretty good. Think it all depends on how you search etc and what you are prepared to sacrifice.

My friend hubby is a carpenter and he has tried lots of different companies some good some bad and some with lower rates of pay. He is no working North of the city and commuting an hour to work.

Have you submitted a visa or just thinking about it? Things change constantly and once your down the road to being here you can contact companies and maybe get a job before you get here. Have a search on the forums search thing and see if that helps put your mind at rest (or not)

Building work is atrocious at the moment, my oh whose a bricklayer has been out of work for 6 weeks now & still no signs of anything turning up, the contacts he has over here are in the same boat. He's rang tons of companies & they're all saying it's the quietest they've ever been. He's even been looking into other states and contacts in Perth and Sydney have said they're quiet. He's looked at getting into the mines but unless you have tickets (which he did have in UK) plus years of experience it's virtually impossible. He's even applied for labouring jobs but most of them are asking for various licences so he doesn't stand a chance. He's looked into some licences & they cost around $1700, we're happy to pay that if he has a chance of securing work but most jobs want experienced drivers.

Sorry for the doom and gloom just hope it picks up soon.

My hubby is a joiner by trade, he worked at a few different shop fitting places in the last few months. The place he first worked at went into liquidation (very badly run company). Everyone he worked with has found a job within their trade, lots about if you go looking, it is a bit of who you know not what you know though. He is working a CNC machine for a company that make stuff for the mining people, it a good job and pays well. He worked for 14 years on a CNC in the UK so this job is good for him. He is commuting 45 mins in a morning as he leaves at 5am and is taking about an hour to get home. This is no more commute than he did in the UK. He is happy in this job so all good.

HI PIA, This feedback got me really worried now. We are going there January next year. My hubby is an experienced Electrician and i am Health care assistant. As you were saying that the building industry is very quite at the moment, does this include electrician as well?? hubby got his Oz Electrical Reg training here already and hopefully that will make it easier to get a job when we get there. We are moving there with not much money on our pocket and just hoping that we get jobs quicker. Any advice you could give us?? Thanks.

Hi Jacks, well my o/h is a roofer, and his been out of work since November, as others have said new building work has nose dived.

Also totally agree it's not what you know here, it's WHO you know.......

Good luck to you and your family

Hi Tracey, what type of training is Pete after? I run a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and we do training for confined space, breathing apparatus and warden training, have a look http://www.afsrto.com.au we may be able to help or point in right direction. worth a shot.

That is even worrying... we don't have family there and no connection!! :(( I'm sure eventually once we find a place to live and get my children settled in a new school, we will find friends. I hope it's NOT the case of who you know but How good you are in the field. I am confident that my husband will get a job if they will base it on work experienced and professionalism. He is very good at what he does here in UK and also very hard worker.

Hey Jacks, what do you do in the Telecomms industry? If you give me an idea I can maybe send you some of the research I have done and vice-versa, depends what you actually do though as it is a big old industry ha ha

So what about the chances of finding work in IT? Systems admin, server support that type of thing?

This type of IT work should be fairly easy to get if you have good skills and knowledge. My partner specialises in server infrastructure and there is a big emphasis on VMware over here. He was in his last job for four years (first job when we came to Adelaide) and decided it was time for a change and within two weeks and only one interview he had a new permanent position as a Senior Engineer.

Nov/Dec/Jan are generally the worst times to be looking for work as a lot of places close over the Christmas period as this is the kids 6 weeks school holiday period, so just keep it in mind if you are heading over in January.

Not sure what to think after reading this, but hopefully I'll be ok. In IT myself, same as Pixie's husband. No Visa yet, but hoping to be there in the latter part of next year if not before.

My OH is an IT project manager and he said cause the market in Adelaide is very small, any injection of "new talent" that has good solid working experience within their field will normally get looked on favourably, at the moment there seems to be a lack of high end network engineers, his company has been trying to recruit for a while but has found it very difficult as anyone with good skills is normally tied into their company. The IT market at the moment is generally good and pay not too bad.
