my worries for getting a job

Hi all,

As the time for moving draws ever closer the worry and pessimism for getting a job is starting to kick in, at the moment i am an electro/mechanical Engineer and have six years experiance in the Engineering industry, although i have no further education qualifications.

Heidi is the main applicant as a Staff Nurse so we are confident that she will get work no probs but it is i who is worried due to not having any qulifications to get a job that pays well enough to keep my family when we decide to have another baby.

Can anyone give me any advice what Adelaide could offer me in terms of a reasonably well paid job, I am a hard worker and would do what it takes to put food on the table, but i am reluctant to travel all that way to struggle when i have a well paid job over here.

Heidi and i both share the dream of a life down under but i cant get excited due to the worry of not being able to support my family.

We're just starting our visa process and already I'm worrying about work. I'm not an engineer, but I've seen lots os work out there for qualified engineers of all types.

 

Try Defence jobs. There are loads of Army, Air Force and Naval bases that employee civi spcialist.

I am sure you'll have no problems. Have you looked on any of the job websites. If not might be worth a look on http://www.careerone.com.au/ type in profession and search on Adelaide. Atleast it will give you an idea of whats available now.

You have to be a citizen to get into most Defence jobs, so you'll be waiting a while.

most jobs advertised don't come with the saleries advertised, interview first and if they like you you can go back and then money is discussed. it can take weeks from the interview to you actually getting the job. Steve has been for interviews and 6 weeks later is no nearer to actually starting the job.

 

try some recruitment agencies but be warned they are often not bothered about helping you until you are actually in the country. try these agencies.

Hi Jamie,

 

A move like this is a gamble, the good news is you will get a job without worry, 2 of our engineers left today as there is a massive shortage within adelaide. The bad news is without a degree qualification some companies are a bit more fussy, so you may struggle to walk into some of the top posts, and a defence company is unlikely to push through your citizenship for security clearence unless you have something to offer they cannot find locally.

 

If you can get into a company in a technical role, you should by the sound of it work hard enough and prove yourself to be promoted quite quickly. It's still worth even before you arrive to send your CV over and apply for jobs on the sites listed... There really is a such a shortage you will probably get a job to walk into for when you arrive. Although Defence is quite difficult to get into without citizenship, it's still worth sending your CV into them direct, do a google search on BAE Systems, AWD, ASC, Tenix, Raytheon and Saab. When I was at tenix they were desperatre for Technical Illustrators, and they promoted non citizens into these less sensitive departments.

 

A fully qualified engineer here can earn upt and maybe over $100k in an automotive and defence company, in a more techincal role then around $60k is a decent starting point.

Found a brochure I picked up at an expo there were a number of companies asking for Engineers including Monadelphous Australia; Laing O'Rourke; one called Lycopodium and Norman Disney and Young. Perhaps you could contact their personnel division and see what your chances are there. Otherwise as has been suggested do a general websearch and check out websites like Seek etc.

 

Does the company you currently work for not perhaps have australian links so you could use the reputation you have built up at your current company to leverage a position in Australia.

not sure, about your situation. did u say u r qualified as an engineer or have u just been donig the role with out the papers, u say engineer or do u mean tradesman, ie apprenticeship

Can sympathize with your worries as we too feel the same!Hubby is a Telecom Engineer in UK good secure well paid job!Would be giving up the security of this to arrive in Adelaide with 4 young kids and no job!

Have already heard Telecom Engineers gone out really struggling to get work!So very much a worry!

Wish it wasn't!We are hoping to arrive this August/September!

Thanks for the links, the sites i have looked on, companies specifically ask for "qualified Engineers" and although i have a sound knowledge and experiance my worry is would that be enough?

Thanks for your help and the links, i appreciate that companies would want you in the country before showing any interest, what kind of work is Steve looking for? just out of interest.

Any idea what the general wage of agency work might be?

It realy is a gamble, and I have never been known to be a gambling man, but I want this soooo much im prepared to throw caution to the wind and give it a go.

The thing is, the Engineering industry is so vast im quietly confident there must be something out there for someone whos got their head screwed on regardless of qualifications (thats what i keep telling myself anyhow).

I will check out all the links people have been kind enough to provide, and send my c.v. off to as many companies as i can and hopefully something will come up.

It would be such a huge dissapointment to not find what were looking for, this country holds no hope for our kids but im not going to go down that road.

Thanks Zoot, ill give that a go, the company i currently work for is a small local based company with no connections in Oz but saying that i worked for a company a few years ago which opperate worldwide, so ill look them up on the internet.

Im not what you would call qualified, just well experianced in my role as an electro/mechanical engineer.

I studied at college but was given the opportunity to work for an engineering company before the course was completed, I stuck at my job and learned a great deal but at the end of the day i have no papers to show me as a qualified Engineer.

I was reading other posts from ex BT engineers who are finding it hard to get work, it realy is a tricky situation to be in, desperate to leave a country that you no longer want to live in but also leaving behind a secure job to take the chance in a place far away, I totaly understand everyones worries and apprehension and just hope it all comes good in the end.

As if the qualifying for the Visa wasnt stressfull enough we have to go through the mill wondering if we can provide for our famillies!!! once all is said and done and were all settled i guess thats when the enjoyable part of Oz starts to emerge.

to be totally honest Australia are hot on there licenses and qualifications then they check your job ability out and without all 3 your a non starter. when they are desperate for tradesmen they may overlook a few things here and there but not your license and u cant get a license with out the quailfications. mechanical fitters dont need a license you may try that avenue

Steve is in Construction, he's been working for Domestic and Commercial builders, but at the moment he is working for Westfield who build shopping centres. He is currently in charge of the refurbishment of the three centres in Adelaide.

 

I'm not sure of the rates that are charged through agencies, Steve mostly uses them to set the interviews up goes from there. I think you'll find once you are here and going to a couple of Agencies, they will take your talents on board and get you the interviews where you can sell yourself. he has certainly found it easier to let them find the jobs and he decided if he wanted to take it further.
