Hi Pommes,

Just trawling through the job sites for OH (carpenter) and saw one job advertised asking for ABN. Anyone? Not a clue what it stands for.

ABN stands for Australian Business Number. You apply for it through the tax department. If you run a business with a turnover over a certain amount, then you need one, so most self employed tradies... including those who subcontract from others have one. It means also that you charge and collect GST from your customers and then fill out your BAS ( business activity statement) and pay up your tax plus the GST you have collected. You will have been charged GST on goods and services used to run your business so these are offset against the GST you collected. The remainder is what you pay the Government on top of tax. In short you become a tax collector

Soooo they want someone that is self employed then. If that's the case it's a bit too soon for that as we dont arrive 'till Nov 1st. Thanks for the info.
