IT industry related queries

Hi all,

Firstly, here i introduced myself. And, I have already read all the IT job related posts in this forum. Few posts were really informative, few were scary. :_)

Secondly, I'm following some job sites regularly including seek.com . Unfortunately, I'm still not getting a clear picture about the SA job condition.

So, my questions will be specific.

i) I'm a telecom billing specialist, with a good skill in Oracle and PHP. Is there any good telecom companies in SA ? Also, is there any online list of software companies in SA? I didn't find one.

ii) Whenever i search with, suppose, "Oracle", seek.com returns lots of jobs in other metropolitan cities like Sydney or Melbourne, but very few in Adelaide. I know the ratio which should be considered as normal, but I'm afraid, SA seems much low than that for IT jobs.

Is seek.com placing the real picture? Or, the agencies can manage good jobs which they usually don't place via online portal?

iii) Having visa subclass 475, I'll be able to move other regional states too. Can you refer me some other states which you consider good for IT jobs besides SA?

iv) A bit personal: i can't afford more than $5000 to settle me up at the first launch in SA. I'm still single. Do you think, this amount is good enough to survive before i get a decent Job? I don't mind odd jobs as temporary basis.

These questions might sound too frequent & bothering for you, but those are really important for me on taking decision for movement. Thanks in advance for all of your replies!

A lot of agencies will use Seek but it might be worth looking for those that specalise in this type of work.

If you google 'telecoms adelaide' this would give you a start ... bit of a trawl I'm sure and you may have done this already. I'm not sure what a telecom billing specalist does but you could have a look at the websites of the bigger telecoms in Australia; eg: Telstra, Optus, AAPT but I'm unsure whether there is a big market for this type of specific work in Adelaide which is one of the smaller state captitals cities .... sometimes things are handled in Melbourne or Sydney instead.

I am guessing now but would think that $5,000 would probably keep you for about 3 months if you were careful and found shared accommodation and were not working.

Good luck with your search.

@rumon, I am also from Bangladesh. Congratulation for your visa!!!

On point (iii) provably you can't work and live without SA for first 02 years. Cause

"Immigration SA is required to monitor your residence in South Australia for the first two years after your arrival."

Other things, I think no option for telecom billing there. From telecom they are some opportunity for customer services, Sales & Marketing and Telecom Engineer.

IT market in Australia basically Microsoft based, opportunity there for oracle (only oracle) very rate there.

Thats all from my research. May be I am wrong.

Hi ! thanks for replying.

Visa-475 allows moving to any regional states other than Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Gold coast etc. Have a look: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/regional-growth.htm.

The only thing is, you've to take permission from the state where you'll be moving and have to inform SA immigration too.

Yap You are right. I have checked this long before and also asked my agent. But the thing I came to know is, previously it was possible to move but now it is not possible. If you can find some way please share with us. After all we are in the same boat. I am a IT professional, going to Adelaide.

You will be fine, there is quite alot of IT jobs about at the moment and Oracle is needed. My advice would be to get in touch with agencies and get registered before you come- try Hays, Spin IT, Talent International for starters. Goodluck!
