Getting work experience

Just a quick question. Im have having a chicken before egg problem. Im an electrician and I need to get on site experiance before I can get an A class licence. Problem is no one will touch me without my licence. Is there a magical spell that other uk sparkys have used to convince Australian employers ? also is there such a place as a job centre or is it all online only.

Hello Simon, trust me you are not alone, I'm in exactly the same position, and I know others like us are out there. Some have had to give up on being a sparky and do some crap jobs. From what I can make out, Adelaide seems to be in a bit of a slump, electricians seem to be pouring into Adelaide like water as well, which isn't helping. Been told lots of companys prefer Poms, but I guess they need bigger jobs to slot you into. Unfortunately the Aussie licence system is based on college time served, as with so many other careers here. So when we arrive this shoots some of us in the foot. Bit frustrating to go through all we've been through and get stuck in this position. Personally I think there should be a system in place where Aus employers get us for a bit of a bargain while we do work experience, and I mean that for all trades. Staying positive still though, not taking it too personally, the licence is essentially a work permit and from what I've seen here electrics wise, there are those that have it who shouldn't.

Let me know if you find the magic wand, if 300 other sparks post on here we're f*^"ed. In the meantime as my applications get nowhere, I shall take solice in the sentence f^"* em if they can't spot talent!

Hi HRHelp, thank you for your input into this subject, but the issue is not the gap training requirements. I have already been through and completed your aforementioned skills gap training at my own expense, and I suspect OP has as well. When you arrive with an offshore technical skills record, you are required to complete a period of work experience as well as college time. Its the work experience bit that is difficult to complete. Probably the current economic climate thats stalled us, unfortunately the vetassess process needs a strong job market or helpful contacts. Really appreciate postive input though, its a long way to come to be unemployed.
