i currently work in uk as practice nurse in a gp surgery, and we are hoping to come to adelaide next year. Although i would prefer to stay in practice nursing or a similar role i am prepared to work in any nursing role. is there much work for practice nurses in adelaide?

Hi, I have seen quite a few jobs for practice nursing here, and worked in melbourne for a short time as one myself. It is different not as much autonomy (or not in the practice I was in) was nice though! They are just bringing in medicare locals which ultimately is aiming for how primary care is in the uk, so practice nursing is evolving here! so there are jobs but I am not sure how high the competition is though as more social hours, there are loads of private specialist clinics here though.

Thanks for your reply wellse, I got the impression there was less autonomy and its different but i'm happy to adapt. I love practice nursing and am so keen to stay in this or similar. are there any specialist diabetes clinics? am thinking of doing my diabetes diploma here before I come.

Hi, I only have experience in melbourne with regards to Diabetes nurses over here, there roles seem to be few and far between, I dont think they have really cottoned on to the importance of these kind of roles well not to the amount that really are needed. They do chronic disease management in the practice and I am aware these roles are evolving. It would look good to have the diploma and help with practice nurse roles, but you probably will have to do further study here to be a Diabetes Educator (specialist nurse) if thats the area you would prefer to be in. Its good to have the experience and courses but they seem to like you to have done the australian courses aswell. Saying that I did a diabetes certificate in the UK and got paid more here for having it! I hope that helps!?!

thanks, yes that helps! i dont think ill worry then too much. diabetes management is huge here in uk for practice nurses, but im passionate about asthma more than anything and do all that in my surgery.
