What about the jobs in IT?

Hi, I am kind of worried about the recession and the fact that when I search on seek for IT jobs (developer or security), there are not as many as in other states.

 

I thought that being a occupation in the sponsored list meant that there was not enough people to fill the open positions and that they needed more people with those skills .

For those of you who are already there, do you think that getting a job in IT in adelaide is easy? I am eager to read your responses!!!

I have the same worries, I have read a lot about people moving to Adelaide on state sponsored and not being able to find decent work so end up moving back.

 

I wonder if anyone here knows how to find out if certain jobs on the sol list are close to reaching the ceiling limit.

IT jobs are not easy to come by in Adelaide. My husband was lucky - right place, right time, right skills. But we are the minority. Most of the jobs are low paid helpdesk support. Sorry to be a party pooper. However, you don't always have to work in the field you are sponsored for on your visa. If you are open to perhaps doing something else then you may have more options. It probably depends on your skill set tbh xxx

I worked in an IT team (as Personal Assistant) at a large bank from March 2011 to May 2012, almost the whole team (9 testers) were made redundant and their positions offshored to India. But most were able to find new positions quite quickly within Adelaide.

There are going to be less positions in Adelaide than Melbourne or Sydney because things here are on a smaller scale. It depends what in IT you do, the area I work in (infrastructure) there are still opportunities and where I work we have recently taken on a couple of guys.

Well, my main focus in on Infosec (Compliance), but also I have skills in programming (java), when I search for jobs requiring one of those skills, I dont get a lot of results

There are less IT jobs in Adelaide but there are less people for each of those jobs as well. If you have specialist skills then research the companies here that might require those skills and approach them directly when you get here and sell yourself to them. My OH got his job by doing this - he worked in IT for an exam board in the UK and approached the SACE board here direct, saying he had arrived, had experience in the area and did they have anything and they invited him in for a chat. They didn't have any roles for his level but they were keen to take him on so he got given a position at a level that is lower than the one he is working at with a weighting so he is paid the right amount for what he does.

 

Don't just rely on seek or agencies to give you a picture of what is going on as not everyone uses these. Go directly to company websites and look at the career sections on there. For some companies if they can fill a position without having to go via one of these routes then they will.

Good advice above, people need to get more and more creative with their job searches in the current climate. Sometimes you might need to take a step (or two!) backwards or sideways to move forwards in the long term.

It may be easiest for you to pick up a contract role intially as these types of jobs are alot more widely available than permanent roles. That would then give you time to get to know the main players in Adelaide and look for other opportunities.

 

Hays have a good IT salary guide if you go to their website and I've used their recruitment agents a number of times over the last few years. You need to strike up a relationship with them though (i.e. call them instead of just sending an application in) otherwise you are just a name on top of a CV.

I'm worried like you ColinOz, I've just contacted the VISA folk to see if I can work in another part of Australia. I really don't want to do this, we've set out hearts on Adelaide, but with two little people to support the choice might have to be made.

I have read that you can work anywhere in Australia with a 190 visa, but I definitely want to give it a try, if I get my visa grant this year

The other way of looking at it is, if your skills are specialist there may be less competition for the roles. I have gained 2 positions recently because it is a shortage area, so you are competing against less people. You just need to know how to interpret the adverts so that you can market yourself and sell your skills.

Certain times of the year are better than others - I came over at the start of August 2012 and found a permanent infrastructure position very quickly. I believe over Xmas \ Summer Hols everything goes dead so you are coming over before that which is good. I'd echo meeting recruitment agencies and building up a relationship - that's helped me and a few others out.

It might be helpful to fellow IT people if contacts of who to speak to/ email at various agencies. I've sent a few CV's off to Agencies and heard nothing. Someone on here did it back in 2009 so it's a few years ago.

This question has come up many times on this forum and just because you are on a skills list, it does not necessarily mean that these skills are in short supply when you arrive. I know the Government used to make it very clear on the application process that just because you are on a skills list there are no guarantees of work, like a lot of us that come here with no jobs, to a certain extent it is a leap of faith and whether you make the leap is up to you. The visa gets you into Australia, something that a lot of people dream of but are unable to get here, but that is all.

But as I said before, I am going to try in Adelaide first, it looks like a nice place to live , and they were the ones who sponsor me.
