Is there a chance to get a job before arrival?

Hi

 

My name is Pawel and I come from Poland. I live in United Kingdom presently but i'm going to arrive to Australia in September/October.

 

Does anybody know companies in Adelaide which are recruiting to job online (I mean online applications, video interviews etc.)?

Is there any chance to get any job before arrival to Adelaide?

 

I'm an Electronics engineer (specialized in signal processing, telecommunications, sound processing etc.) - does anybody know Adelaide's companies in this field?

Have you looked on seek.com.au? This is a good job site to start with and will give you an idea of what employers are looking for in your line of work and what jobs are out there (although be aware that some agencies may just be fishing for candidates without there being a specific job).

 

The Adelaide job market is very interesting and there is a lot of emphasis placed on who you know and also being in the right place at the right time when an opportunity comes along.

Hi from what I have read over the years,your chances are better if you are already in Australia when you apply.Obviously there are exceptions to this.Please also be aware that jobs slow down around Xmas too and pick back up afterwards.

Hello My OH has applied for loads of jobs whilst in the UK and not one agency have contacted him back.

 

This was also my experience (and I have 25+ yrs experience in HR and recuitment so perhaps should have been at an advantage) and many many others - the major recruiters in Adelaide are reluctant to consider anyone until your feet are on the ground here. In this day and age of skype and videocall it is very frustrating. My advice is to network as best you can with people in your industry in Adelaide. LinkedIn is probably the best way forward for this. Happy to give some advice if you are not familiar with it.

 

The Adelaide job market is about who you know as much as what you know - so get knowing people!

Lets just view it form the employer viewpoint. Why would an employer make his life harder and employ someone who is not ever in the country. Why would he want to wait for weeks or maybe months for the person to arrive. Once the employee arrives the employer will have someone who will take time to adapt to their new life. Isn't it easier to just get someone who is here already, whose references can be checked, whose paper work all tallys up?

 

I know I must sound really cynical especially as my wife was given her job months before we arrived but then she's so specialised there was no one in Australia that could do here job.

Look at it from another viewpoint - recruitment from interstate is commonplace and few employers are worried about doing this. Face to face interviews with those coming from interstate would rarely happen due to the expense of travelling. The distance and the timezone may differ to the UK but it is still a telephone or skype call, followed by reference checking (which is only ever done via email by sending a letter of request to the referee). An employer would know when the migrant is due to arrive and the cultural differences have little impact on those coming from the UK.

 

The reluctance to engage jobseekers directly in the UK, when the move date is known, is a mindset and nothing else. It will change in time.
