Hello all. Long time lurker first time poster.

 

Have been invited to apply a couple of weeks ago and am now going through my job options in more detail.

 

I am a secondary teacher able to teach all three sciences up to age 16 and physics and chemistry up to 18. I could also swing a few maths lessons as i have the subject knowledge to do so even though I'm not technically qualified in maths.

 

I am looking at Adelaide, but it turns out you can't register before going over so can't secure work. What are my chances on supply work as I settle in (I will be supporting the family so need pretty regular work)?

 

How is it looking for permanent work in all three sectors in science; private, government and catholic?

 

Any advice greatly appreciated as I'm really stressing if I can make this move work and my deadline to apply is looming!

my wife is a teacher and has gone through the process and it is not as easy as it appears. Once you have completed your Ran training ie safeguarding you have to so a first aid for teachers these are both book able on line and you can do the first week you are here then you register with sa trb and they confirm your temporary teaching status. Then you can register with DECD so you can teach in state schools.

You can also register to teach on supply they call it trt and independent schools have a cut off date before the new term starts. The catholic schools want you to visit each school with your cvs and letters and certificates some will take photocopies but others want to see the originals.

 

you then wait for the calls and in the meantime you complete letters of applications and your cv to apply for the contract posts for which most schools want 3 or 4 copies and then you wait.

we have been here 6 weeks of which two were half term so schools now in last term before summer breaks and she has just got her first days supply

a lot of schools offer a short term contract either term or 11 months as saves them money unless of course you want to teach in the country schools!

 

But saying all that Adelaide is a fantastic city and the beaches superb as are the hills that surround it

Sounds more or less as I thought. Even though I am in a demand subject would I struggle to get myself permanent work sooner rather than later. Am I making a huge mistake thinking I can support wife and kid on a supply teachers pay in the mean time (is there enough work)? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.................

Hi- my hubby is a teacher. He teaches primary school and has been turning work away. We also have a friend who was working four or five days a week trt. The courses can be booked from the uk and they are first aid and a mandatory abuse course. My hubby did 4 days trt and was offered a contract which has turned into a two year contract with a view o becoming permanent. There is plenty of work in the northern suburbs and if you are flexible and reliable schools will always have you back. My husbands very first day trt was home economics in a high school....

Maths and science will definitely open doors. Senior school teachers of Physics always seem to be highly sought and the ability to teach some high school maths is a plus.

Hi WillC, I am a secondary English teacher choosing to do TRT work and usually work 3 or 4 days a week. The pay is much better than supply work in the UK and I think with your subject specialisms, that you will be absolutely fine. You just need to be prepared to wait for a short while until you pass the mandated notification and first aid courses and then get yourself around all the schools in your area and plug your cv.
