Hey people of PIA, i have lived in Adelaide for 18 months now and tried to get in at Tafe to finish my plumbing license so many times but no one is getting back to me, I have completed most of my RPL and have been told I need to spend 5-7 weeks full time at Tafe SA to complete the elements, iv rang and left messages, emailed and even went in and spoke to a senior lecturer whom in turn told me they would contact me to sort this out....that was 5 weeks ago and no call!!!

What does actually take to get noticed here??

So I am now considering working in the mines and wondered if someone could direct me in the right direction to get started in this industry

Have you contacted SATAC? They may be able to help with enrolling you into an appropriate program.

That sounds like a nightmare do vetassess not put you in contact with the regulator of your trade with the proof of your skills that you have completed.

You would think that after spending so much money emigrating that you should get your licence relatively easily.

I hope if I actually go that I won't have to wait 18 month's on my license.

Just one question. Do you think that it's worth all the hassle emigrating. I'm having a lot of doubts about going just wondering if you think it's worth it?

This is a good point. How do tradies know what they need to do to make their quals recognised in Oz and how they go about it?

 

Surely there must be information somewhere and if not perhaps PIA should make up an info page from forum members experiences for the various trades.

To be fair Toneless and Howde, we have settled in really well, both me and the wife started work after only 2 weeks of being here and both the girls settled in the school really easy, however to get your quals recognised here is a little difficult than expected and all plumbers and electricians HAVE to do the RPL process.

Here in SA they used to do night schooling at regency Tafe which is now called Tafe SA, but now that has stopped and only weeks days are available, which makes things a little more difficult to complete if you have to work to live.

I won't let this deter me tho, eventually I will get my license sorted.

I am now looking at working in the mines which would give me time off to complete my license , and it's good money too.

Look, I wouldn't deter anyone to come here, we love it and have no intentions of going back to the uk. We feel that we have a few hurdles in the way, however we will jump them and then I will be 100% content about settling In SA.

Toneless, vetassess only regulates your quals whilst applying to emigrate over here, and really doesn't account for much once you are here, it's then up to you to enrol in Tafe SA or other training establishments to get your license.

Okay, so your issue is that as you have a day job you can't attend the required course in the daytime - not that a course doesn't exist. Thanks for clarifying.

 

I guess advise to new migrants is to do the course immediately- then look for work - if you want to stay in the trade you got here on.
