Newly Qualified School Support Officer

Hi, I have very recently qualified as an SSO/ESO and registered with DECD, would anyone know of any vacancies in any Primary schools in the southern suburbs... I know its a long shot but if anyone hears of anything, I would be grateful.

Congratualtions!

I don't know how you qualified ie. whether it was through study(I just had my skills verified, got a number, found a job...but that was some years ago now.) so you might know all the stuff that follows.

I don't know which codes you already have, but if you can get any of the ones referring to working with students with disabilities, you might find it easier to find work. Schools, particularly those specialising in special ed like Ashford, , Hamilton etc used to (I've been in mainstream for the last seven years so things might've changed) fill temporary vacancies caused through illness, whereas classroom support tends not to.

If you have / can add skills in delivering Numeracy and Literacy programs such as QuickSmart, that will also make you more employable.

Since you are an ECW as well as an SSO, surely you are able to look just about anywhere :notworthy:. High school kids are pretty much the same as primary school kids, just in bigger bodies lol so don't limit yourself!

You probably know that recruitment has changed over the past year / eighteen months. I am not sure whether that has made it easier to get a contract that lasts more than a semester, or just added a couple of new hoops to jump through. All positions are advertised via here:

http://www.decd.sa.gov.au/hr/pages/jobscareers/jobsandcareers/

Look under permanent, as well as temporary, ancillary positions.

Even though jobs are advertised and all applications are supposed to be judged on their own merits, I think it would be naive to think the incumbent isn't in a strong position. So, I would suggest you try to get known in as many schools as possible, even if by more volunteering.

If, as I suspect, you do know all this, then sorry. Good luck and enjoy!

Have you filled out the EAR on the decd web site? Decd has a new way you apply for work now. All jobs are meant to be advertised on their web site and you apply from there. There was one at hallet cove resentley not sure if it's still on there, worth a look. I'm a ECW and SSO too but I'd still drop my CV off at some kindys as you might get your foot in the door picking up some relief work. Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of working for decd haha x.
