You can apply for a tax file number online. Go to www.ato.gov.au and look under tab for Individuals. Good luck.

Sorry for the late reply. If you're looking for part time or full time work, I have found that Entree recruitment have been wonderful for me. Basically I registered with them and two days later I had a job. Their website is:
