Hi there

My son Josh is 17 and has been working as a trainee hairdresser since he left school in the summer, after being offered a training position following a successful work experience placement.

By all accounts he has been progressing really well, both the salon owner and the training provider are impressed with how well he is picking it up. The salon owner has told me she is confident he will be a good hiardresser, that he has 'it', but he is worried that he will not be able to continue his progress and find a job.

Is anyone out there looking for a Junior? We arrive 30th December.

Many Thanks

Melissa

I will be totally honest with you, There are apprentiseships, but most of the time the like them "fresh" from their prevoc. Which is a short course in basics, shampooing, phone answering etc. As he has done one year already he might be ok on that front.

What I think you will find harder is getting one at the same level as he is on.

Also most of the salons that take apps are around the city, Glenelg and the chain salons like Hairhouse warehouse. He will more than likely need transport if you live outside these sort of areas. Can he drive?

I was told there are about 1800 salons in Adelaide and 800 in Perth!

An lot of the salons here are one man bands and dont want the "bother" with an apprentice, they just want a casual part timer who can work when they want them to.

I would suggest you try contacting salons here now and finding out the chances him getting an apprenticeship.

They earn as a first yr something like $7.00per hr.

Thanks for the reply, He's only been working since September, so doesn't mind starting from scratch. I think working in town would do him good as well, as he's started going out socialising since he started work, and has stopped hanging out on the streets, thank God!:laughxmas:

thanks again

Mel and Darren.

Hello Kim

Thanks for that, i think we'll give a ring tonight. We'll look at the web site in a minute, if the college is in Gawler then that would suit us. Hope it's going well.

We went out for the showdown dinner with Mel's mum and dad last night. Every time we mentioned Australia she changed the subject. You'd have to be a fly on the wall to see it and believe it. Massive denial.

See you very, very soon. 11 days to take off!

Darren.

Clipjoint is in the city.

They are like fast tracked apprenticeships, they cost a fair few thousand $$$ and you get your qualification quickly. But I dont think you learn that much expirience in that time

We had a look at their website, and it was over $16,000 for the course. We'll give that a miss!

He really would be better off getting an aprenticeship, are you going to be living in Gawler, he will need transport.

That's what we thought, eventually we'll be living just south of Gawler. He's going to start learning to drive as soon as we get there.

I am not too good on where exactly Gawler is, or how long it will take to get to the North of the city, try contacting salons in that type of area. Or in the large shopping malls in the north. There is Tea Tree Plaza and Elizabeth. I dont know which of those would be your local large mall.

Guest Aussie pat

We're currently living at North Adelaide and I had my haircut at The ClipJoint this week. They have an 'apprentices wanted' sign in their window. This am I asked the staff about vacancies and what sort of apprenticeships they were. They regularly have vacancies for traditional apprenticeships (not the ones where you pay) and have told me to tell you to email them about your son. I realise that North Adelaide is not close to where you'll be living but it could be a start or a lead to other salons in the industry looking for apprentices. Perhaps the salon manager could help with suggestions closer to your new home? If he's interested you need to email Luke (salon manager) at melb@clipjoint.com.au address the email for his attention.

Hope this is of help and gives you a lead in the right direction.

Goodluck.

Thankyou so much, we'll definatly email him. I worry more about Josh getting work than i do myself. He obviously has many reservations about coming out there, and if we can settle him into a job/routine, then hopefully he won't want to go back to England. Our daughter has got her place in school, so he is our biggest worry. We've only got 7 days to go, so we're getting a bit nervy on all front's. he travels about 30 mins each way to work now, so a bit of travelling won't bother him. I think travelling, in fact, will be good for him, because he'll get to move around.

Thanks again

Darren.
