My OH has just had 2days off work, first time in 3yrs:arghh:...phoned all the builders in the book, all said not at the moment but most have work coming up in a wk or two..he managed to get a wks work in port wakefield which means he's away all wk but when he gets back he's got local work lined up (thank f***)....

 

So to sum it up, theres a bit of a lul at the mo but looks like it will fire up again soon...the new first home owners grant has really helped so just have to wait for all the planning to get processed:D

Can I just add to this and question work for plasterers? We know its all boarding and rendering but there doesnt seem to be many answers for plastering when ever I ask about it? Really starting to worry now that my hubby will struggle to get any work within his trade.

you will need a licence if you want for for yourself.if not just wait to you get here look in the paper and keep your eyes on here.keep in touch with me as i know a few brickies so may be able to help.cheers mark.

There is some plastering that is done but most is tape and jointing and plasterboard work. In 8 months here have only had 1 gang of plasterers on a site i have been on for a small amount of work. Thats not to say its not used but does not seem the norm. Be handy if your hubby does render work etc as that seems more common.

My husband has just started work with a plastering company, they have loads of work, saturday and sunday aswell! Everyone seems to say that plasterers are in demand.

Ok, i know that the Adelaide Desalination plant is going to be commencing soon at port stanvik. I know this because i am working on the current project in Sydney for Sydney water. The company that does it will be needing just general labourers, who have their ticket to work on construction site. Now here's the good bit, they will also probably need a some people that will have to be trained in some more specialist areas within this project, which is whre i come in, and give you the training you need for this. But basically, the will be sinking big holes in the ground, and then sending down a big machine to cut tunnels for laying the pipework through. i help training people in this aspect. The work is 12 hour shifts, one week of nights, one week of days, and weekends too sometimes. The money is REALLY good, with the guys here "taking home" over $2000.00 PER WEEK. They also get extra rates for night work, and weekend work, and if you work local holidays, you go onto to triple time. Oh and believe it or not, if it rains (unlikely in Adelaide!! lol) they put you on double time for wet work. They will probably put out an ad in the papers, but i should find out a couple weeks before it is advertised and post it on here with all the company and contact details. For anyone who has worked on building sites in UK and here, you will know that they don't knock themselves out, so although you have to pass medical and be relatively fit, it's not back breaking work that will kill you. Anyone interested before i re-post, send me a PM

Thanks Ian, he does do rendering so maybe thats something we should look into.

yer im interested in the work, but not over in adelaide yet. my cousin is a manager at tiagra a building firm in adelaide and he said its dryed up a bit but i should still find work in bricklaying. when does this job start, we hoping to get visa soon as we lodged sep 08
