IT jobs

Hi

 

I know jobs are hard to come by at the moment but is it realistic for my husband to get a job in IT in Adelaide? I've heard that its not that big an IT market down there. At the moment he contracts in the UK and wondering if it would be better to be a perm job or continue contractiing?

Also where are most of the job likely to be? So I can get a rough idea of areas to live?

I think if you read through the threads here you will find the employment market is tightening. That's not to say there aren't jobs out there. Adeaide is not noted for IT particularly. Has he been looking for work with the major job search sites?

Alan is receiving alerts from JobServe and looking at other job sites. So far the ones already mentioned are the best ones we've found. If he can find a job before leaving the UK that will be amazing, otherwise we are thinking of city centre living for flexibility in travel to potential employers.

Totally depends...he could get either contract or perm, and end up anywhere. My hubs had 3 job offers when we got here, all in different areas. You really won't know until you start looking to be honest. There are actually a lot of IT jobs here, and sometimes govt openings too if he has a writing/research background.

Depends what exactly your husband does in IT I expect. Mine is in IT Support and is struggling to find something that isn't a junior position as while he has 10 yrs experience, he is not a specialist in anything in particular. He is going to have to take a pay cut certainly. We are struggling to find something.

 

I think there may be more call for internet related technologies? Don't hold me to this but I have seen more jobs looking for Java specialists and things like that. Or people with management experience/ team leaders. There is always hope, but I think in the current market everyone is finding it tough. xxx

My hubby is also in IT, he is a support analyst team leader. From reading this thread it sounds as though may be difficult to secure employment. Does anyone know whether openings for IT in the defence industry? Good luck to everyone.

My hubs didn't take a pay cut, and I don't think the IT salaries here are that low. Keep in mind cost if living is lower than the UK as well. There seems to be a lot of doom and gloom on this board in relation to IT jobs, but I don't think it's that difficult to be honest.

It took my husband 3 months to get an IT job after applying for 35 positions. The majority of feedback he got was that he was too qualified. He has over 10 years experience and the job he has now is a junior roll. He has never earned so little in the 10 years he has been in this field. But its a start and we have some money coming in that is very much needed. I think everyone needs to be prepared to take anything to start with just to get some income and an Ozzie reference.

For most jobs in the defence industry here, you need to be an aussie citizen so if you are coming over on a visa it will take you a few years to get citizenship. Apologies if you're already a citizen!

Hi All,

 

I've been here since Oct last year and have found there are quite a number of jobs in the IT industry but as with any vocation it depends on your experience. There are a large number of jobs in defense but security clearance is required which can be obtained by your potential employer even if you are a non-aus citizen, just so long as you're not from Pakistan or the like you should be ok, UK citizen with P.R and clean police record should be no prob. Adelaide also has a couple of ISP's, so there are high end network jobs right down to helpdesk and customer service roles, again the IT industry covers such a range of skills it's impossible to say what would suit you. There are less Perm jobs but contract jobs are still strong which is in line with what you would expect in this economic climate. However when speaking to agencies it appears that this market has always favoured contracting over perm staff. I'm currently registered with Paxus, Hudson and Hayes and they all stay in touch and even when there's no jobs in the immediate future they do touch base with you and keep you up to date. Which is reassuring if nothing else :-)

Another thing to note is timing; the Adelaide IT job market pretty much shuts down after mid-October (save specialist fields) and doesn't start up again until mid-January so bear that in mind when you're planning your exodus.

 

I was lucky enough to find a role after 9 weeks (arrived end of Nov 2007) and am fortunate enough to still be in the role - it's more junior than the role I had in the UK but has prospects, plus it's only a contract. If anyone is here now, and looking, EDS are hiring for various 3rd level positions, from general server analysts to messaging (exchange) experts, so it wouldn't hurt to call them direct. On the networks side, Di-Data do have a presence in Adelaide (not sure where) and in the CBD you'll find Telstra and the ISPs (Internode, Adam, Netspace etc...).

 

There's definitely work out there but you really need to keep on top of some of the agents as the laid back attitude doesn't always work in your favour. Don't expect to walk into a role the moment you land, unless you have fairly specialised skills, especially now.

 

Defence does indeed require citizenship and a perm. government role will require permanent residency status (job for life).

Do you know what the situation in Adelaide is like for IT secondary school teachers? My husband is an HOD, IT in an NZ school (we are British citizens looking at Adelaide and Perth at present). There is such a huge shortage in the UK; anyone know if it is on the curriculum in SA and how the subject is broken down?

New to the site but my family and I are coming out for a reccie early 2010. We have just received our state 475 temp visa and I will be looking for IT work, specifically around Cisco networking, either as a hands on engineer or pre-sales consultant. Early indicators from the main agencies suggest there is work out there but is this REALLY the case? Hopefully I can find out more in the 2 weeks I will be in Adelaide.

 

How is the current market feel? Are things picking up like in the UK?

My husband works in IT and his company just hired someone. Just get your resume in order and when you get here, get in touch with the agencies and set up some interviews. Quite often, when the agencies think they have someone good, they contact their best clients and put you forward even if the client isn't specifically hiring. There are jobs. When you get here, also look for jobs with EDS, which is a huge IT company here.

There has been a mixture of answers but in IT it depends what your area of expertise is I am offered work all the time but I am IT Support. If I was a Database Admin then the jobs would be harder to find. A company will have one DBA and may be 10 IT support staff. I hope this makes sense.
