i know the feeling , i have found it hard too , i have ben looking in retail as well and have had no luck as yet , factorie are opening a few new shops in south adelaide so that might be worth a try , i think it is just a case of getting some resumes printed off and getting out there and seeing who is looking for staff and handing them out , although i have done that too and am still looking , good luck and hope something come up for you x

Hi Donna

New to this forum, but spent alot of time on britishexpats. Only just found this one.

Anyway, moving to Hallett Cove sometime this year when i sell my house, and just wanted to know some info about Hallett Cove please. I have a friend who lives there, but she the only one i know there so anymore info would be great. I have 3 daughters aged 12, 10 and 1 so any info on schools would be great and activities for my girls. Also my hubby a builder, so any info on the job front also.

Anyway, hope to hear from you. Thanks so much, Mandy

They are horrible, but as long as you know that they are beforehand not so bad. I had no clue they even existed would not have gone along had I know. Anyway, basically you fill in any forms required, you sit in a room with about 10 to 20 others, they give you a subject to discuss, the first one with the moderators, then they eliminate some people, and give you a subject to discuss amongst yourselves, then eliminate some more this goes on for a while until they are down to about 4 people who get a personal interview, usually done by a panel of people including management and plebs. Very difficult for those who are shy or for whom english is a second language. It is the latest in power struggle for those who desperately need work, I am extremely outgoing and found it daunting, and in fact if this were to happen to me again (and I was not informed that the interview would take this form) I would walk out. The thing that upset me most was that I had worked in management for an international organization, much more qualified than my husband, but the form of interview all round for me was much more demoralizing, lots of panels, whereas Bob was given lunch out for coffee and squired around the place. I was told I was overqualified and would never get a position in Adelaide at the salary I was used to or at the same level and I should look interstate. I opened bought a business (bought my own job basically).

Anyway, have a bit of a practice with friends and when you get into the interview make sure that you speak up, push the point that you are a team player all the usual guff.

Good luck, let us all know how it goes. I hear good reports from Bunnings that they are great to work for, know every time I go in there everyone has a bit of a british twang.

Cbeeb that was an extremely helpful answer to those desperate to find work, perhaps you could hold a cv workshop and include a spelling lesson. Comments like yours may make you feel better but can be so upsetting to those trying so hard to get a break.

Often when you go round Westfield Marion etc there are signs in the window for casual staff - maybe worth taking a couple of resumes with you just in case. Seems that alot of people get jobs this way - saves on the advertising.

I have posted on this site several jobs over the past few months, and as far as I know no one has followed up on them, and they have been genuine positions. I agree a lot of places do advertise on their windows, around the market there are always positions being advertised on the windows of cafes etcetera.

Hello

It is really tough out there at the moment esp if you are looking for hospitality work, my other half was out of work for nearly 6 months before he got a job at the casino! If you don't mind odd/ unsociable hours they are usually looking for staff, they advertise on their website. Other than that you could try temp agencies, it's not predictable but gives you some income and if you get your temp agency on side you can work almost continously. I've been temping for nearly a year now and have only been out of work for max a week. The only agency I know that deals in Hospitality is Extrastaff. They have an office on King William St in the city. I have only used them once for office work but they seem ok. I know there are some others so it might be worth having a look on line!

Good luck!

Nic

I noticed Cheap as Chips are advertising for Christmas Casual Staff in the junk mail today, (bit early!) but might be worth a look. From speaking to people when I was looking last year they tend to offer the good Christmas staff work after Crimbo has finished.
