We are planning to arrive in Adelaide around November/December 2010 but living area is currenlty unknown. My question is that due the new school term starting end of Jan 2011 and us arriving in November/December, which I would assume is school holidays. Are schools open to view during holiday periods, otherwise we will not be able to gain a place prior to the new school year starting!!!! Help, advice needed as I am sure we are not the first in this situation??

Thanks

Dawn

The school year for 2010 ends 10th Dec and the principals would still be about in the following week just to tidy up all the bits and pieces. The new year for 2011 starts 31st Jan and and the principals would normally be in the previous two weeks to get things ready.

Hope this helps.:wubclub:

Hi Dawn,

Think most of the Xmas hols start mid Dec so you might just get in with a visit before...I don't imagine you'd get anywhere in the hols but not 100% re this.

Best wishes,

Zena

Legally you have 3 months to enrol your child into school, so why rush. Once you have a place to live, the kids will be on holiday anyway, school returns about 27th January and most principals and staff are there 2 weeks before, you can check out the local area and then see schools, enabling your kids to start beginning of the new term.

It's true that u have 3 months to get them into school, but as you are going to be here at the beginning of the year, I would urge you to get them into school within the first few weeks of term. I was in no hurry, but my 3 boys were bored at home, knowing nobody and having little to do. Once they were at school, they made friends quickly and that helped them settle. I think if we hadn't done that, they would have been homesick.

Hi,

I arrived here at the end of November 2008. I got an appointment to view a school 3 days after i arrived & enrolled my kids to that school & the linked kindy, for the last 2 weeks of term.(they were 4 & 5 at the time)

Not sure if every school would let you enroll so late, but it was a great way for the kids to make some new friends before the Christmas holidays, as 6 weeks is a long time for them to not have anyone to play with. It help me to make some friends too!!
