Teaching in SA

Does SA have an equivalent to the Graduate Teaching Programme (Fast track)? I teach in FE here in the UK and would like to get into schools when we come to SA. Do i do the year here before i come? will it be recognised in SA if i do? I teach both Maths and English here to post 16 and have subject specialisms in both areas. Don't know whether the latter would be recognised in SA though.

Any advice guys?

Hi Heather,

I trained in the UK via the GTP route and unfortunately, SA would not accept it. I had to study at UniSA for four months to gain a post grad diploma in education at the cost of ten thousand dollars (!) and only then could I apply to teach in SA. Maybe it has changed since then as this was 2009 and if not, hopefully it costs a lot less. Studying at uni was a great experience though, so it all worked out well. I then taught in SA and have finally paid off the debt! Good luck.

Do you teach in primary or secondary? did you have a degree in a subject? i have a degree in general education so could do primary conversion or if my subject specialisms were recognised then it could be secondary!

Which uni did you go to? if i did the GTP here although it would be wasted due to our plans i would be paying around 7k so i think i would be willing to pay in SA to get what i want.

Hi Heather,

I am a secondary English teacher, but my degree is in psychology and social sciences with The Open Uniersity and my GTP training was in English. I also retook English GCSE and A levels again to keep up to date! If you did the PGCE route in the UK, you would be accepted as a teacher here no problem. It's a shame they don't recognise the GTP as we end up with exactly the same certificate as PGCE teachers! They do look at the qualifications/experience you already have and are willing to convert them, so you will gain some credit there.

Hi,

I hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread. I am a primary school teacher who has only been over here a few weeks. Cazzie, who was your first point of contact to find out if your UK qualifications are recognised?

Many thanks

Paul

No problems Paul. I dealt directly with the TRB - Teacher Registration Board. UniSA who I studied with gave me credit for my previous studies and then I earned the rest. Good luck.

Paul, here is the bit of the website you need :

http://www.trb.sa.edu.au/applying.php#overseas

You need to do a first aid course and a Mandatory Training Course as well (both one day) as well - you can find links on the website above (look on the left hand panel for various links/pages). Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs :)

HTH :)

Hi, definetly no eggs been sucked here. I am really confused and disappointed by the hoops it seems I have got to jump through to teach over here. I never thought it would be easy, but I am hearing things like one or two year courses, $$$$$ in fees. :arghh:

Thanks for link and advise.

Hi Paul

You need to do a one year course the current fees for the year are $5440 provided you are on a PR visa if you arn't the fees could be $20,000. TRB don't really want to deal with you unless you have the qualifications needed, but do contact them to confirm for your own peace of mind. I would recommend also contacting some of the Uni's to see what they have on offer and if possible get started as soon as poss.

Did you do the GTP in the UK then? If not, what path did you take?

If it makes you feel any better - I know of several Aussie teachers in the UK who have gone to uni in Oz, taught very successfully in Oz for many years, and cannot register in the UK because they don't have.....Maths GCSE (not accepting the fact that Oz don't do GCSEs) The hoops coming back this way are far worse - its just the UK has an education system that lies about courses and qualifications (just look at the Level 2 courses situation) - imho they should make it very clear when taking up a place on a GTP course that its only recognised in England and Wales, a complete con (cue massive political rant here usually, but I'm far too knackered at the mo lol)..

I don't know if this will help Heather - http://www.decd.sa.gov.au/hr/pages/jobscareers/teachervacancies/ - http://www.teachinginsa.sa.edu.au/pages/home/university/ - I do remember that there were a few ads in the paper which were looking at graduates in particular disciplines (eg science) who were being offered short courses to qualify them to teach, mainly in the secondary area I think, but again I don't know the status or of it would be of any use to you.
