Hope to attend uni next year, anybody know of any financial support I could receive?

I am 20 years old and hoping to attend uni next year, I am a permanent resident but not a citizen, it doesnt appear that I am entitled study assist, just curious if anybody knows of any financial support I might be entitled to at all, thanks.

Hi Adam and welcome to the forum,

 

I have twin boys both the same age as you and both at University in Adelaide. Unfortunately we couldn't find any assistance for the costs of attending university except that they are entitled to paying Commonwealth rates instead of international rated for their courses due to them having PR. Both of the boys have found it relatively easy however to earn enough in their part-times jobs to not only pay for their courses but also to save a reasonable amount of money as well.

Hiya, i phoned Flinders uni as my son wants to study biomedical or civil engineering and asked about hecs..i was advised that until he is a citizen he is not entitled to hecs, just the commonwealth discount, he would have to self fund.

Yep....same here. We have a daughter who goes and we cant claim anything in the way of help.

Yep, that's always worth a try. As mentioned, you cannot HECS your debt and you have to pay up front - well my wife does at UniSA.

I think it also depends on how long you have been here and whether you have anyone you can rely on for financial support. Both my daughters have (and one still is) been to Uni, they could not apply for HECS as PR but could, after 2 years as PR apply for financial assistance from centrelink.

If you live with your parents, Centrelink will most likely assume that they can support you.

Unfortunately Uni fees charge you as an 'international' student if you are neither a permanent resident or a citizen. Under the SA Govt Skills For All funding of vocational education at TAFE (and some private training organisations) there is some free study available for some visa categories ... eg: 457 visa gives you access to free Cert II ........ TAFE is usually much cheaper than Uni and there are pathways from TAFE to Uni ... so this could be a solution for you to begin studying towards your preferred career whilst waiting for PR/citizenship status.
