Hi all

We are moving to Brighton area in July, just found out the school won't take my 13 year old son because he doesn't do music. He is a very sporty child and very good at football, is there any other schools in the area that have a good sports program and have a good report for good grades in maths, English etc.

cheers russ

Hi Russ, How do you know the school won't accept your son? have you been in contact with them? We were looking at Brighton for our 14 year old daughter (we arrive Dec 13), I knew they had a strong music program, but I didn't realise it was a requirement :-) I haven't been in touch with the school yet, we just liked the look of it. I believe they are quite strict with regards to being in the catchment area. Not sure if it helps, but someone mentioned Woodcroft school on here? Are you sorting the school out before you arrive? We have been wandering about what to do about this. Good luck, hope you find a school soon :-)

Hi I'd echo the how do you know question. I thought if you lived in the zone for a school they were obliged to take you. As you are not here yet then they can't give your son a place but I would have thought that if you move in to the school zone they would have to. Check out myschool.edu.au for the school zone area. It will also allow you to search for other schools in the area.

We have found a house in waradale, the woman who is renting us the house has a granddaughter who goes there, she phoned the school for us , they told her that he doesn't Do music he can't go there, he has no music lessons at all now as he didn't pick it. The house is in the catchment area. We were hoping to get him in one of the best 10 schools, seems a lot of schools have a high percentage of below standard par grades, think this is going to be a nightmare to find him school

It looks to me as though you may be outside the catchment area for Brighton High School if you are renting in Warradale http://www.brightonss.sa.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/BSS-School-Zones-w-map.pdf - looks like it's outside the lines to me. Some schools are prepared to stretch the boundaries a little for their specialist programmes, but for popular state schools that are already in great demand you may struggle.

The top 10 schools all enforce their zones, unless entry is through a specialist programme. If you want your child to go to these schools, then you will hve to rent somewhere within the school zone. The only exception to this is Adelaide which is so busting at the seams that this applies to yr 8 admission only and they have special dispensation not to have to take other kids in other years unless there is space in that year level. most areas have smallish 2 BR units to rent. You need to show a rental agreement for one year. Once your child is enrolled, you could feasibly move after 6 months and your child would not have to move schools.

There are three ways into Brighton Secondary - you have to be in the catchment area, or you can get in via their Special Interest Music stream, or they can get in via their Special Interest Volleyball stream.

If you are in the catchment area they cannot refuse you entry, however if you are renting they may ask you to swear an affadavit that you will stay within the catchment area for a certain amount of time.

Get in touch with the school - I found them to be very helpful. There was a bit of work to do to get my daughter in there a few years ago, but it was worth it.
