Hello, I'm Chris and i'm just wondering about what the universitys are like in Adelaide.

I've looked at the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide.

Any information on either would be greatly appreciated.

My son goes to Flinders and He likes it there. Uni Sa is in the city, I think Adelaide uni is too. Flinders is nearer to marion

Hi Chris its Lucy. I'm 16 in July and doing my gcse's at minute. We have state sponsorship and have lodged visa application same time as your family so looking at same timescale. look forward to reading your replies cos am wondering what the uni's are gonna be like too.

Im fran, and i've been studying law at Flinders uni for about two months now, and absolutely love it! I originally applied to the University of Adelaide, but at last minute applied to flinders, mainly because its closer to home, but also because as flinders is all on campus (Adelaide and uniSA are spread across the city) it has a much more friendly feel (and i know of heaps of people who have changed from Adelaide uni to flinders...)

what sort of things do you want to know about university here? social life? work load? and what are you thinking of studying?! as all three unis seem to specialise in certain areas..

Hi fran, thanks for your reply. Ive been lookin at the Aviation Academy as recommended on another thread which is run by University of South Australia at Parafield Airport. Any info on the social life, work load etc would be fantastic.

Hi Chris,

 

Workload - typically students do 4 subjects a semester within their degree (eg law, medicine, science, arts), with 2 semesters a year (sometimes a summer and winter semester are offered so you can do mores subjects per year if you wish). Usually each subject has one tutorial per week (interactive class) of one hour, plus two lectures (in a large hall) per week of one or two hours. This equates to about 4 hours per week "class time" per subject, 16 hours per week classes in total. Students are expected to put in 35 hours of work per week (so about 15 hours homework).

 

Social life is huge at Uni of Adelaide, there is a popular pub on campus, plus more clubs/sports teams/social groups than at either of the other two unis. Uni SA has a high proportion of international students (who are generally quite studious and not as into the extra curricular activities), and because it is spread over about 4 small campuses, it is hard for there to be large events in one place. Flinders Uni has lots of sports teams, but a pub which doesn't open often.

 

Generally, people would say Uni of Adelaide is the most prestigious of the 3 unis. It is in the "group of 8" (8 aussie unis recognised internationally for their prestige, entry criteria, courses, etc). Uni SA has a lot of "vocational" degrees (eg aviation as u mentioned, plus things like tourism, computer science, psychology - this uni stems from a vocational college). Finally, Flinders Uni is the only uni where the campus isn't in the city (it's about 8 kms south east in the foot hills). It is a large campus, quite picturesque with a lake, hills, lots of trees and open space. It is easier to get into most degrees at Flinders than Adelaide. It is noteable for its law degrees as being "innovative" as opposed to Adelaide's being "respected".

Can someone tell me if your on an SiR Visa ie a Temp resident, are you classed as an international student paying HUGE fees.

 

And if so can you stop paying huge fees once you have become a permanent resident??

What age do students start uni? How do they compare to our universities, or would they be more like our colleges?

Also how much are the fees per term, or year. Maybe dance or performing arts.

If you are on a Temp visa you will pay international fees...which are very high. If you are on a perm res visa, you pay a lower fee. If you are a citizen you pay the same fee as a perm res BUT you get the option of paying off and saving, I think around 20% PLUS you het the option of a HECS loan.

Going on my daughter she would leave yr 12 at the age of 17 and then start uni, I think she is among the lowest ages. My son arrived here almost half way through yr 12 so he opted to start in yr 11, making him a yr older. He has a friend you sped through high school and is now at uni, she is just 17!

By the end of yr 12 most students will be 17, some will be 18, anyone younger than this now has usually skipped a school year. Fees for citizens and perm res students are about $4000 for teaching and nursing degrees $6000 for everything else except $8000 for medicine, dentistry etc. These rates are per year. International fees for the same courses are $14000-$30000. This is because these students pay the true cost of the education without subsidies from the government.

 

TAFE courses are usually a bit cheaper. Some TAFE courses are bachelor degree course, but more practically based, eg Bachelor of Performing arts.

 

Most university courses are 3 years long, education degrees are 4, dentistry and vet science 5 yrs and medicine 6. Our courses at uni are equivilent to the ones in the UK. You come out of it with a degree in something and can if you wish study for an honours year and masters/Phd etc. A lot of the courses at TAFE give you a diploma, but sometimes these courses are deemed better by employees

 

you leave with all the practical skills and less of the theory. It all depends on what your children want to do.

We are here on 495visa & therefore have to pay international fees & whilst we knew this and we are not complaining the fees are very high for international students attending university.

Our daughter is at Flinders University studying Law. Her degree is a Bachelor of Laws & Legal Practice which is 4.5 years in total, the fees for her degree are $18.500 per year. The other posters are correct to point out that that 'Professional' degrees i.e: Medicine, Dentistry, Law,Vetinary Science etc are very expensive.

Franchesca had applied for her university place before we left the UK and therefore we were prepared for the cost of university fees. We have found that some have made no/few enquiries and therefore are unable to consider sending their teen to University as the fees are too high and they were not prepared for that expense.

The cost for uni does seem high and glad you pointed it out as we are going on 475 visa we will have to pay international fees and I didn't realise this but will apply for pr as soon as two years are up which will help out alot

I think to enter uni straight away as int.student, you would need A levels. If not, yhe system here is, that you do the SACE and get as high a TER mark as you can, including the necessary subjects required for your chosen course. As there is a limited amount of places on each course, the places will be given to those with the highest TER. |This doesnt allways mean that the " brainbox" subjects have the highest TER. Some ,lets say not so brainbox subjects have higher TERs due to the popularity.I would suggest, depending on your daughters subjects, to consider looking at some time in yr 11 ( also depending on what time of year you arrive) and then a full yr 12.

 

On the PR thing after 2 years, you wont have to pay Int student rates , but you still wont be eligble for the student HECS loan. You need to be a citizen for that. As PR , you have to pay fees up front, and are not eligble for the 20% discount as citizens are.

 

Our son is at Flinders by the way.

There is no set age for uni enterance, you just need to meet the entry requirements/ score. Most students are 17/18 if they go straight from school, but there will be a few 16 yo or 19/20 yo plus mature age students. Seriously though if your son or daughter agrees consider them having 1 1/2 to 2 full years in school here before uni, it gives them time to settle in, make friends, do yr 12 with all the sense of passage this brings and gives them a bit more maturity when they start uni. I went to uni here at 16 and probably did not get the full benefit of uni life, plus walking into an anthropology tute to discover everyone else is about 60 and just loves to talk etc was just too big a jump from school. I'm all for those gap years anyway, gives them a chance to discover other interests and things they may never have even thought of. Beats starting then dropping out, especially if you are going to be forking out international rates.

Rachel and smit are right about going to school. It will give them chance to make friends. This IMO is easier done at school. I have met people with teenagers who are struggling in the workplace and tafe/uni to fit it and find friends.

hi chris I have just been reading your info I see your sister is 15 we are just about to start the process but my son is 15 what do your parents and sister think about her education as she has not finished but is so close .Is she happy to start again with only a year left at high school, my son isn't keen , any imfo Icould pass on would be great , thanks.

My sister was not very happy to find out that she had to re-sit most of her exams. She also said that she would repeat the year if it means we get to go out there. Because of my parents ages, we need to get out to Adelaide asap and if we leave her exams another year i will be half way through sixth form so its one or the other.

Yeah, havin a swimming pool will be amazing lol.

I think our school this year are doin some of the GCSEs in year 10, so really im doing mine at the same time as my sister is doin some of hers. So i think it will be a bonus having GCSEs and also taking the HSEs.
