Which school?

Hi,

Moving to Adelaide from England and so many questions....... When (before or after we arrive) and how should we begin to look for a school?

We will be on a 457 visa and were told public school fees are not payable in Adelaide, is that correct? I've been looking on a school website and it confuses me (that's not hard)

Can anyone recommend a good public high school for a 16 year old, main subjects are science and math.

We will be moving to Adelaide and will be able to move into a catchment area.

Glenunga international high school and Marryatville high school reviews look good. Does anyone have any experience or views on these?

thanks

Glenunga and Marryatville are two of the best senior schools in Adelaide. I have a colleague at work whose son goes to Gelnunga and she is very happy with the school. The areas surrounding both of them are very nice but also very pricey. If you can afford to rent in the area then it would be a very nice place to be, although not particularly near a beach. Check out myschool.com.au for the zones of the schools and tables showing the year nine Naplan results. You can't get hold of year 12 results anywhere that I have found but I happen to know that both schools get good results in year 12 as well. If you fancy living near the beach Brighton and Henley High schools are also good schools and get good results.

Have a look at this website http://house.ksou.cn/ for more information on the schools and the areas they are in. It is a Chinese site designed to help Chinese people decide where to live.

I was told that the fees wouldn't be payable on a 457 visa? Can anyone confirm this? Thanks

Read down the page, broader considerations covers it. You are not liable for fees in SA on a 457. You'll pay the usual costs we all do for books etc each year.

I think I'm missing something? I looked at the link and is says NSW,ACT & Western Australia fees apply on a 457 but nothing about SA?

it says we may have to pay minor admin fees.

whoops sorry that's what you said lol early morning here so didn't read it properly.

You can use http://www.findschoolzones.com.au a mobile friendly website which you can use to find and compare zoned public schools based on their NAPLAN (http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/naplan.html) scores.

Glenunga International, Adelaide High and Marryatville High do rate high in that sense.

Hope this helps.

We have always had to pay fees for public school and I don't know anybody who hasn't. Schools charge a fee whether public or private; the only difference is private schools cost a fair bit more.

Were you talking about international fees perhaps?

Our kids started at a public primary school when we were on a PR visa and paid the same as everybody else - around $240 each pa. At high school we paid from $320 - $500 pa, by which time we were citizens. This varied according to which year they were in as senior school tends to be a bit more, or whether they were on a sports program or taking specialist music etc.

School fees vary, but even if you are eligible for a School Card ( for low income families) you will pay something. Sorry :(

That to one side, if your son is really keen on maths and science, maybe take a look at the Australian School of Maths and Science:

https://www.asms.sa.edu.au/

It is a great school situated on the outskirts of Flinders Uni, works closely with the uni and takes kids from Years 10-12. ASMS used to be pretty selective and kids needed to meet certain criteria,so you might want to check if he would need to bring a piece of your son's work / reports or whatever. Only if he were interested in ASMS, of course!

Or look at the three schools that offer the IGNITE program, if he is a Gifted and Talented student. http://www.sa.gov.au/topics/education-skills-and-learning/schools/curriculum-and-learning/student-support-programs/gifted-and-talented-education

This isn't a tuition fee though (which is what you pay at Private school) - it is a resource fee. This covers exercise books, diary, stationery, paper, IT / printing costs etc. Meaning you don't have to buy any of this at the start of the year as the school provides everything (at least they did at my son's primary school)

Now at private secondary, we pay tuition fees (thousands) plus have to buy all his stationery, exercise books etc and the school still charges a resource fee for IT / printing allowance...........

Ahaaaa!

TBH, I never really thought about it as anything other than a fee! You're absolutely right though, we didn't have to buy any books etc when the kids were in primary school. We did have to provide exercise books, art diaries, textas etc when they were at high school, but no text books.

Thank you,
