Birthday Cakes

How many of you have had a specialised cake made for your kids party or even for an adult party.

I recently won a cake it was a silent auction for cancer, it was absolutely fantastic a pink fairy castle, I was going to save until this week for my sons party but I don't think he would have appreciated it very much:biglaugh: I don't have the photos on this device but will post them later. I ended up donating it.

There are some fantastic cake makers out there these days it's a shame they don't get used more.

I was looking who you have in Adelaide.

Now I have heard on the grapevine they do excellent cakes but I'm not sure if they do custom design.

So far I like Metros cakes but all of them are fantastic. Ok we may not be able to afford them for general birthdays but for special occasions they are great.

All these are so talented. If you know any other talented cake makers please give them a shout here.

Here are some of my cake makers

My kids are lucky to get a cake from Coles for their birthdays. Some cakes are amazing - almost too good to want to cut in to them. My mum used to make cakes when I was younger. She made flowers out of icing and would use those for decorating as well as piping directly on the cake. When she made wedding cakes and special birthday cakes she would make a bouquet of flowers or something similar for the top that you could take off and keep. I had the flowers from my wedding cake for ages (they were out on display at one point) and only threw away when we moved as I wasn't sure they would get through AQUIS.

And there was me being impressed by my castle cake efforts :

I always make cakes, they're not always successful looking but they generally get eaten which is the point (apart from the one I made with lard once (even the icing) when we didn't have enough butter - but I was only 12)

This is the one I made for our leaving party:

I really dislike the icing on bought cakes - hardly anyone eats it so I prefer to use butter icing which is why my cakes never look quite so slick - I always think it's a bit like using Plasticine to decorate a cake.

Oh wow I love them, wish I was talented, arts, crafts and cooking have never been my forte.

What a shame you had to throw them away, did you manage to get some photos first.

I've made a few. I prefer the actualy cake making process over decorating them. I also am not a fan of icing and flling preferring just a good lemon cake or apple or some such. I also made my own wedding cake as I didn't trust anyone to make it chocolatey or gooey enough. I had choc ganache oozing out of it when cut, dark chocolate orange cake and icing, a really moist sponge, basically just chocolate held in place with a bit of cake :cute:

However, for kids I do try to make what they want. They are not professional looking by any means but the kids eat them and I didn't mind the mega chocolate cake thats for sure. He wanted a chocolate cake, I think a choc sponge, choc filling, smarties and kit kats met the requirement

Here are a couple from past years.

A friend made my baby shower cake which I thought was amazing.

She kept the feet for me to bring out at baby's first birthday, but my partner ate them when I left them on the side for longer than two seconds lol.

Those feet are so real, it's amazing, does she do it as a business?
