  1. Hi All We are deciding whether to migrate or not, we did go to Adelaide last Dec/Jan and all had a great time Since we came home hubbie has been looking for jobs through the various agencies in Adelaide He has seen none that suit his skills and now he is afraid to apply for a visa and we all go (if we get the visa at all hubbie is 44 next week) Is work as hard to find ? He is a qualified Mechanical Engineer but the last 25 years work experience is in the energy sector going into big companies and helping them to reduce their energy bills. Thanks for you help Sally

Sally
  3. Thanks for your reply We will gather as much info as we can before we apply we need to apply for our EOI first so will see how that goes Thanks again
  4. Hi All My OH is a mechanical engineer, he has sent off his degrees to Engineers Australia to be certified, He has scored 9 on his IELTS exam We will be applying for the EOI as soon as we get his certs from Engineers Australia. What we need to do now is try get proof of his work experience He has been self employed for over 10 years now and been contracted to different companies over the years but two of these companies have gone into liquidation (still owing money but thats another matter.) How does he go about proving his work experience - he can get a written reference from about three companies that he worked with but there are so many other companies that he cant. We are based in Southern Ireland too so I don't know if this will make a difference either - He did some work for the carbon trust in UK but that was 5 years ago now. I hope I am making sense. We need all the points he can get as he is in the 40 to 45 age bracket and need to apply very quickly Thanks in advance for your help Sally
  5. We are in Ireland and there is an expo in Dublin this weekend Sandy Coates is over for this so met with my husband yesterday. She said we should apply for the 189 or 190. They can take up to 12 months depending on what way the skills requirements are at the moment. We went to Adelaide in December for 5 weeks - my husband has an aunt and uncle living in Adelaide and 3 out of 4 cousins living there. We all loved it and the fact that you wake up every morning in the summer knowing you will have good weather that day is such a bonus. We were there for days of over 40 degrees and it is so different to the heat in Ireland and we were all able for it, The only thing I would need to get used to is putting the kids into thier car seats and the heat of the buckles.......... Also the baby likes going around barefoot and walked on the concrete out the back and screamed and it took me a few seconds to understand why she was crying. ;-( The fact that you can plan to go to the beach or picnic and not have to cheack the weather 1st was so great......... our children will have to learn to keep hats on and suncream themselves as this is the norm. I found food expensive but that was because we were converting to euros all the time but I am sure once you are earning Ozzie dollars that you will soon stop that. We went to the outdoor cinema and it was such a great experience - we never saw gangs of teenagers or other gangs .......... even tho it was their summer holidays, it is very clean and I felt safe too. Our own children loved it except for the baby as the mozzies seemed to love her no matter how strong or how much repellent we put on her - her Dad was the same I really feel that our children would benefit from growing up here and would have a lot more opportunities than they would here. Sally

  8. We are on this flight from Dublin to Dubai and then Dubai to Adelaide we leave here on the 8th of Dec and spend two days in Dubai and then on to Adelaide on the 11th. We are soo looking forward to visiting Adelaide, We are coming over as a family to see family and see will we settle here as hubbie is applying for a visa. I really hope we get it as work here is drying up and finding it hard at the moment We would love to meet with people and get their experiences on moving to Adelaide, we will be in Adelaide from 12th December till 10th Jan and have four children ages 10 (will celebrate her 10th birthday in Adelaide) 7 (nearly 8) 3 (nearly 4) and 22 months Thanks Sally
  9. We are arriving in Adelaide for a visit on the 11th of Dec too - I have 4 children ranging from 9 to 20 months, I have my bags packed as I never put away our summer clothes as we never even got to wear them much this summer. My two older ones are looking for specific toys so I have them bought and packed in the suitcases - Will I be stopped in customs with brand new packaged electronic toys? For the two smaller ones I was hoping to get something in Adelaide before the big day, We will be arriving late at night on the 11th of Dec. We are staying till the 10th of Jan and are really hoping to convince ourselves and the kids that this would be a good move for all of us. Can someone tell me what date the schools will close for Summer Holidays? Would they let our two older ones have a look around the school ? We are staying in the Marion aera of Adelaide. I would love to meet up with some of you that have made the move and are happy or have advice or chat even. (We are not poms tho we are from Laois in Ireland) Thanks Sally x
  10. How long did it take? Hubbie is about to start applying now but heard it can take up to two years is this true? TIA Sally
  11. Thank you Nik - I want to bring double and kingsize Uk sized bedding with me but we will probably bring our beds too, I will look into shipping prices now as we have 4 kids, it might be better for us to bring our existing beds and bedding Thanks again for your reply Sally
  12. Can you please let me know if double beds and kingsize beds are the same sizes in the UK? If we bring our double and kingsize duvets covers and but summer duvets in Oz will they fit? Thanks Sally
  13. Hi All, My husband and I have booked a reccie to Adelaide in December, we are bringing our four children ranging in ages from 9 (she will turn 10 in Adelaide) and the baby is 18 months will be 22 mths when we go 23 mths on our return. We are flying with Emirates to Adelaide direct via Dubai. I need to sort a holiday visa and travel insurance. Here are a few questions I would like to ask 1. We have not applied for a permanent visa yet, how long do these take? Should we apply for this now before we go? (if we go I would love to get there for Jan 2014 so that the children start in school on the start of the new year. 2. Should my husband look for interviews while he is there. 3 We are visiting from 12th December till 12th Jan - will a lot of things close over xmas or for long - I know that it will be school summer holidays. 4. We are staying with family in Marion area - is there anything else we should be doing? 5. My 7 year old does not want to go even for a holiday as snakes and spiders terrify him - will we encounter many of them? Thanks so much for your help Sally x
