  1. Hi Beccy I'm also quite new here (only arrived 4 1/2 months ago). I was a primary teacher in the UK but am now working as a Kindy Teacher within a childcare centre. What do you teach - EY, Primary or Secondary? Wish I had been given the advice about teacher registration before I got here as it was a nightmare having to delay teaching until it all came through! Good luck with your teacher registration and as Emma said, take the documents in to them in person to get them checked. Have you submitted your application for teacher registration yet? If not, you can do so whilst you wait for the other checks to be done as it can speed the process up too. I submitted my skills assessment and application at the same time and as soon as my police check came through I got my registration 3 days later!

  3. Well that's the first two weeks over - can't believe how fast it has flown by, it only feels like yesterday since we landed. Having said that, I also can't believe how much we have done in that time, from finding a long term rental, enrolling kids in schools, buying a car, finding a footie club for our eldest and all the other mundane things like tax, insurance, etc., I should be knackered by now!! Can't wait to start work on the 27th and have a rest! lol Having said all that, it's great to be here even if the sun isn't shining so much. We've made some new friends and had a lovely Sunday lunch with friends we met on our reccie - thanks Flossybeth and family x It was also great this morning watching the bairn trying to surf (although there was hardly a wave to be seen - he's keen!) it made a change from the UK routine of prising him off a playstation! Hope the next two weeks go as well and we continue to settle in. Thanks for all the help and advice to everyone on PIA as it has definitely made our move smoother. One more thing - why are car parks so dark?? Totally lost the car tonight at Colonnades and spent ages walking around switching my key fob off and on hoping that my car was close enough to respond! Thankfully it was and I rescued it when it flashed it's lights at me across a very crowded car park!! Never felt so thankful to see it as I didn't even know a taxi number if it came to the worst and I didn't find it and didn't fancy the walk home! lol Oh the joys of new cars in new car parks!
  4. Here at last! Chill out day today but busy day tomorrow as we have a car to buy!
  5. Well folks that's us on our way tomorrow to start our new lives approximately 1 year after we started this whole process. The info and advice received from this site has been invaluable and no doubt will be in the future as we find our feet. Already met one lovely family whilst over on our reccie and look forward to meeting more of you. Thanks everyone for your support.
  6. We went to see the penguins in the rescue on granite island when we were across in October. The access for that should be fine for a wheelchair but again, not sure about the island as a whole.
  7. Hi Karen, can't see why not. When we were across on reccie, I just picked up a PAYG type card which worked in my unlocked Nokia. Good luck to you all as we will be travelling over permanently in 10 days!!
  8. Hi everyone, well that's us booked our flights for the 24th March arriving 26th and accommodation for the 29th March - which leaves us with 3 nights with no roof over our heads! Can anyone recommend a hotel near the airport or Marion which is reasonably priced and has family rooms (there is 4 of us). We thought the Marion/airport areas were a good idea for short taxi travel as well as having to sort out tax codes, etc at the Marion Shopping Centre and it isn't too far from the city either. Any advice greatly appreciated. Nearly there!!
  9. Like Snifter says it depends on circumstances, but we did it alone. Pulling together my work experience wasn't easy as I had to gather 3 years of working as a supply teacher together to prove I had at least 1 years full time experience (and I mean pull together from 1/2 day here, one day there, etc). We also had medical issues to deal with but to be honest when we spoke to an agent they didn't have a clue anyway about the medical condition, then we had to move a visa onto a new passport, but all in all, it was still a straightforward process and I just had to take it one step at a time. Each step was quite self explanatory for us and just took time and patience and yes, we got there successfully in the end!!! So good luck with whatever way you wish to do it. Pros and cons for each I suppose, but if you are after any help and advice this site is a godsend and always feel free to email for any advice too.
  10. Flown emirates twice from Newcastle and they were great. Trying Singapore this time from Heathrow as a lot cheaper and also want to compare so we can advise family who come to visit in the future.
  11. Hi, does anyone know of any gyms that allow kids in? Our youngest, 11, goes to a gym close to where we live in the UK. He's only allowed to use cardio until he is 13, then he can use light weights. Just thought I would ask in case anyone has seen one. We're looking at settling in the southern suburbs around Christies or Seaford.
  12. Hi, I'm Linda and my OH is Dave, we've got two boys 11 and 13 and we plan to move out as soon as our house completes - hopefully by the end of this month (March)!! The boys are still coming round to the idea but once they are settled I'm sure they will be fine. I'm a teacher and have accepted a job offer with an early learning centre in Blackwood, to start once we arrive and settle in (they are being very understanding) and hubbie is a driving instructor who will retrain over in SA and start work asap. Anyone want to chat/ask questions please get in touch, it would be lovely to hear from you and can't wait to meet up once we get over.
  13. HI, I'll also be out shortly and will be in the same boat as you. Once I'm over I'll get in touch and hopefully we can meet up.
