  1. Good advice, Tamara. This is our first winter here - what a shocker. I will never, EVER complain about 40 degree heat. Come on summer...bring it on!!!
  2. This thread is great! I now have a list in my work notes, which is making them look decidedly more appealing. Especially on a Friday! Sorry I can't put anything down here just yet. Only 8 months in and my wine buying has been rather random to date.
  3. Hi Megan, My daughter is also 12 (13 next year) and she was worried when we came over last year about making new friends and fitting in. Well, I can tell you that after her first week at school she didn't look back - she loves her school and her new friends. As AngPhil says, just be yourself and you'll be absolutely fine. In my daughter's class the kids are from all over the world, so they're pretty used to new faces and bringing them into the fold. We lived in Edinburgh for a long time, but I am actually from Harrogate, N.Yorks So, although my daughter isn't from there she's heard much of the Yorshire accent over the years! As for gymnatics clubs, I know that there are a few around. Some very good ones too. This link may help you http://www.gymsa.com.au/ The same invitation goes to you. If you would like to email or speak to my daughter, just pm us. All the best - and good luck!
  4. Yes, Pixie7, a great positive post and we can second that. I have just realised that we have been here 8 months. We seem to have done a lot in a short space of time - and spent a lot! It has all been worth it though. My husband is working, I've just started up in business again and the kids are happy and settled in their school. We have had some emotional ups and downs, but have never looked back. We have been thankful for all the information available on here and all the friendly support from literally most of the people we have bumped into. Here's to the next few years and then citizenship

Nothing here in Flaggy! Maybe it'll come downstream later , or maybe that should be
  6. We have only been here 6 months, so perhaps it is too soon for me to comment. We are a mixed race family from the UK - my husband has Jamaican heritage. Before arriving here we lived in Scotland, and I would say that my husband felt that he came across more racism for being English over there, than for being black over here. So far, we have felt welcomed and race has not been an issue.
  7. dondon75 - the memories of what you are going through are still very fresh in my mind. We also waited 3 years to get our visa and, when it finally arrived, the panic set in! We shipped as much as we could - you'll be surprised how much it takes to replace everything that you have built up over the years. We left behind our sofas, bed and dining chairs as they were old but the rest came. Im glad we did - you'll be surprised at how much you spend in the initial few months (but it is all achievable ). Fortunately, IKEA is by the airport - though a tad more expensive than in the UK and gumtree is great for buying any essential white goods tp keep you going for the first year. We rented furnished for 6 weeks and then moved into the unfurnished (with a couple of painful weeks without furniture over Christmas!) If you need any bits when you arrive, we may just be in a position to donate any essential bits. So just shout!
  8. Hi Andy, I was actually in your office about a week ago - Stacey helped me out with a signature for documents for the UK. I was very grateful for that. The new business helps local businesses that strive to provide a high quality service/ product market themselves effectively to the local community through online and offline media. With my other hat on, I also provide social media management solutions. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Emma (Horsella)
  9. Thanks. Looks like Southern Taxation Services will be getting a call from me this week. Hope I'll be getting recommendations like this some day
  10. Thanks for the quick reply, Penny. Much appreciated!
  11. Hi Guys, We are in the midst of setting up a new business here in Adelaide and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for accountants? Any help would be much appreciated. Horsella x
  12. Thanks ladies, The problem could be the phone that we currently have, i.e. the cheapest!!! Or, it could be that we are in a dip at the bottom of the Craigburn Estate. A friend of mine came over and had the same problem with her smartphone not getting reception. Trust me to find the black spot to live in!!
  13. Sorry if this has been asked many times before, but I couldn't find anything recent on this. We are looking to get mobile contracts but don't want to go with Vodafone as we can only get reception upstairs with our current pay-as-you-go. Can anyone advise us of mobile providers that have good coverage in the area? I think we are going to be forced to go with Telstra, but they are so much more expensive than others. Thanks in advance!
  14. Hi Paula, We arrived in Adelaide last November. We had already earmarked Flagstaff Hill (near Aberfoyle Park and Happy Valley) as a place we'd like to live from our previous trip. We love living up hear as it is so laidback but only 20mins drive to the city - fantastic views on the journey to the cbd too! As kildorragh says, the Marion Shopping Centre is 10 mins away (they have a kookai - hoorah!) and beaches are only 15mins drive. We often go to Brighton beach - beautiful and very European in feel. We also love Port Noarlunga, as it has a great beach but I don't know what the schools are like either. We have three kids, 6, 9 and 11 - think you're bringing them at the right age. Our kids love it here and in only 3 months they have blossomed. Good luck with the move!
  15. Hi , We are arriving in Adelaide at the end October/ beginning November and looking for a rental for a couple of months until our shipment arrives. If anyone knows of any unfurnished properties available at this time, please let us know. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
