  1. Small job (cash) for a brickie. Existing opening to be reduced in size, brickwork (approx 3 new layers) to be tied into existing brickwork on a 1980's brick veneer house. Please PM me if interested. Thanks Chris
  2. Agreed, this is very true. I've just spent 12 months working interstate where its a lot easier to pick up work. On my return it seems to be pretty much where it was 12 months ago....pretty dire and hard going!
  3. Hello All, I've been over here living the dream for about 4 years and now that everyone is settled I'm looking to join a local club (I'm based Hallett Cove although I expect to do a little travelling) preferably in an over 35 league that has a social side too! Back in my time I was a pretty decent player although I haven't kicked a ball for going on 15 years now, looking to keep fit, play some form of competitive football (soccer) with the social side also! Keen to train, as this is my priority at the moment. (I'm not un-fit as such, don't think of me as a couch potato just looking to get my touch back and fitness levels up). Any help, contacts or offers are very welcome and appreciated, thanks Chris
  4. We are looking at renovating our bathroom, does anyone have any recommendations or alternatively if anyone is interested in giving me a quote please PM me. Live in Hallett Cove. Cheers Chris
  5. Port Noarlunga wins every time for me! beautiful beach, very clean, fantastic jetty and on the right day great for swimming or snorkeling over the reef! I like Moana too but not as nice!

    what to bring?

From our recent experience we wished we had brought a hell of a lot more than we did. If your getting a container (shared or not) bring as much as you can and i would even go out and buy new things to bring (although remember to remove the packaging etc so it does'nt look brand new!) For all the reasons mentioned before and the one reason that stands out to me is the fact you will have to spend your money on so many things once you get over here that you have not allowed for, the last thing you want is to be shopping for things you could have shipped over.
  7. The bigger named vacuum cleaners we found very expensive $400-$600 or upto $700 for an upright. Dysons were selling in the region of $800 and they were different to the UK models. We had a Dyson in the UK and wish we had brought it. We did end up buying a cheap one from K-Mart for $90 and it does the job but just not in the same league as the Dyson. We originally stayed with relatives for 6 months and they had an Oz Dyson and i did'nt think much of that either on comparison and certainly not worth the $800!
  8. So did you say that when building the external walls no vapour barriers are allowed for??? If this is the case then it may be better to avoid insulating your walls to any reasonable standard full stop as this could introduce interstitial condensation, the last thing you would want to introduce in a country where termites can be problematic. Not too sure what the dew point temperatures are over here for winter design conditions but I'm sure it could pose a problem if you insulate too much and lower the infiltration rate down to UK levels. You also need to be careful when introducing too much insulation and lowering infiltration levels with ventilation, not to sure what the equivalent of Part F is over here but i've seen this being a problem in a number of UK homes recently from the increasing demands imposed by Part L.
  9. From my understanding your 119 visa is only valid if full time employment is given, if they have taken that away you could potentially be in a tricky position. That said it is highly unlikely from what i have heard before that your visa will be in danger of being cancelled. I did remember reading a few months back now that someone in your position should be able to look for work with another employer and get them to continue (take over) your sponsorship etc....From memory all the information (and there was quite a bit of it) was available on this site and the pomsinoz site. I was looking at changing employer whilst on a 119 and from what i gathered it was quite acheivable, however i decided to stay put in the end.
  10. myself and the wife swear by chicken salt.....love it!!!
  11. Have you ever thought of importing the frames from Europe??? I'm sure you could get glazing units to fit the frames. European frames, whether uPVC or Aluminium all come with thermal spacers to stop heat transfer and it would be quite easy to seal and draft proof around the windows yourself. Importing costs im not too sure about but you can buy direct from the manufacturer in the UK at approximately a quarter of the price over here (and thats including the glazing units too). Just a thought....im sure somebody else must have tried this?
  12. Hello all, could anyone recommend anyone who can gyproc board a single wall, fix ceiling coving, skirting and finally decorate to finish??? We are located Hallett Cove area Thanks
  13. Alternatively she could also stump up approx 100quid and go and visit a reputable migration agent. I first did my own research and then had a consulation with an agent and I found this visit very useful and informative, well worth the money paid (I was located in Manchester and used a local agent). I would however recommend doing your/her own research first as pointed out by freesia and then at least your not meeting an agent without having done any homework and you will be able to ask the questions you need answering as the research will more than likely asnwer most of the questions your thinking of right now.
  14. I arrived in Adelaide on 21st April and the family is not too far behind. We had been looking for a while at a number of places in the southern surburbs but since arriving i am having second thoughts about where to settle down. The downside is that i dont want to put the kids into school and then end up relocating to another area and having to change schools. With this in mind could anyone please provide some advice or positive/negative feedback on any schools within the Aberfoyle Park/Sheidow Park/Trott Park/Hallet Cove area's so that at least i can be looking in the right direction when it comes to choosing schools for the kids. Any information or advice will be greatly appreciated due to this last minute change of plan! Many thanks
  15. Not too sure how it works for nurses etc... I took the IELTS and got my skills assesed by Engineers Australia as my inital plan was to apply through the skilled route. I was however lucky enough to obtain a sponsorship, for the RSMS i didnt actually need the skills assesment or the IELTS, not sure if this would apply to your ENS but they are very similar visa's. I was offered a job from a company back in Jan 2009 which i had turned down. It was by sheer chance that they approached me again in March 2011 which is how I managed to get my sponsorship (after starting down the skilled route). I did originally send an email to the company way back in Jan 2009, it was a basic email outlining my current role and that i was hoping to make the move at some point in the future. I didnt ask to be considered for a job but simply asked about whether someone with my experience and role would be able to sucessfully find work within their sector which started the ball rolling.
