OAA, any advice

I am ready to apply for my OAA but dont really want to book a back up accommodation incase i loose my deposit.

Am arriving in Sept, i have heard families get priority, what do you think our chances are as there are only 2 of us.

I know you dont get to know until 3 weeks before you fly, but am trying to sort out a time scale of when to send our furniture accross.

Any help or advice would be welcome.

We got OAA for 2 of us. It was a 1 bed unit & a bit grim but it did the job & was cheap at $170ish a week. We were lucky as it was only 15 mins walk to the CBD, close to the cafes & restaurants on Hutt St & Victoria Park. We stayed in it for 8 weeks so it saved us a bundle of money until we got sorted with a rental & our container arrived. We found out we had got OAA about 3 weeks before. We had no back up plan!!!

book a holiday unit on a holiday park they usualy only require around $150 not much to loose if u do get it!

Not having a go at you directly MDB (ya never know we might meet up and I hate bad blood) but it seems a bit unfair on businesses to let them down.

This idea has been suggested before.

A lot of business here are operated by small families and they are doing it tough as well.:(

Not ment to be offensive lol, in winter these parks are quite empty, well the ones i have stayed in last winter, they get 3 weeks notice that the unit would or would not be taken and if not they get $150 for free! People have to make plans and who realisticaly could afford to pay out $ks on securing a private rental that they might not use. No offence intended :nah:

We have applied for OAA, a family with two small children arriving mid August. We did look into back up plans, but decided not to arrange anything (deposit was one of the reasons). It is low season so if we don't get OAA we're taking our chances of finding a holiday park or something and move housing higher up the priority list than with OAA.

Dont panic too much, we hadnt a clue where was was staying 2 days before we left the uk, and we being a family of 5, we waited til oz time, had a list of caravan park numbers to ring, and got a cabin from the first one from the list, we arrived in april tho so was winter, but sept its just turned into spring so i would think the caravan parks will have vacancies should you not get the oaa and u will have plenty time to find a caravan park with vacancies:):) 3 weeks is loads time compared to how we did it lol

All the best for your trip over :)

Just received an email from SA stating that the OAA service will be terminated 1 july 2010. They basically give you a bunch of URLs to book something yourself. So that's a 'no' then...

There are 2 of us and we applied 5 weeks before we arrived in March last year and we were lucky to rent near Marion (about 10mins walk away). I spoke to them a few times to make sure they received all the paperwork so not sure if that swung it.

Hi there.....we arrived on 26/5/10 and are currently in OAA.

When we signed our lease on Monday we were told the programme is being stopped on 1/7/10 even though they have loads of accomodation standing empty...all to do with fianances.

Sooooo I'd book a back up plan as it looks like they are ending the programme, which is a real shame as although it is basic it is a furnished roof over your head and cheap whilst you look around for what you want.

Good luck!!!!

Thanks for the info.

We received an emailed regarding OAA and they are stopping it in July and although they will be doing something (preffered suppliers list i think) they dont know when this will be ready).

If anybody hears anything will they let me know but will sort out a backup plan.
