age can anyone help !!

hi i am so confused i am 50 a rgn and am going through the process of registering with AHPRA nearly there for that however i work in the aged care sector and my husband is a registered gas fitter in the uk we are 50 and can not get there on points ? so i guess we need to get a sponser ? has anyone any idea what visa we both need to get and any agencies whom may wish to sponser a rgn ? any help please !

Hi, there used to be an age limit of 45, but you could get around this with sponsorship. Someone maybe able to give you more up to date information.

As a Registered Nurse with Aged Care experience, the Nursing Agencies would rip your arms off to arrange for an employer to sponsor you for a visa.

 

I know a British Registered Nurse who is 57. In April or May 2011, DIAC gave her an RSMS visa, sponsored by an employer in Oz. She is due to start work in Adelaide tomorrow.

 

The demand for Nurses is very strong, and the demand for Aged Care nurses is huge because Australia has the same problem as the UK - an ageing population of souls who are nowhere near dying but they can't manage on their own any more.

 

An insurance company's idea of paradise is one where all the staff in an Aged Care home in Oz are qualified Nurses. This is because Nurses are trained and qualified to do CPR, I am told. So a Nurse can safely be left to manage a shift and a group of Assistants-in-Nursing on her own. This keeps the insurers happy.

 

The only slight glitch is that SA Health say that they are only recruiting internally at the moment. Therefore the Nurse I am describing has to get a privately-run Aged Care Home to sponsor her for her visa. The website below might give you some ideas:

Otherwise there are specialist nursing agencies in Oz who are recruiting immigrants for prospective employers in Oz. I've heard of Ramsay Health, Pulse International and Geneva Health. However there are LOADS of these agencies and a section on the British Expats forum is devoted to Nurses, so I should think the names of several other agencies have been mentioned in that section.

Thank you so much for your help but what is DIAC and RSMS VISA ? as you can see a total novice just cant wait to be approved by AHPRA thats prtoberbly half the battle i ahve to say you have given me hope at my age ! thanks

DIAC are the Department of Immigration and Citizenship in Oz. They have an excelent website:

An RSMS visa is a particular type of visa, administered by DIAC:

Although the DIAC burble says that an applicant for an RSMS visa must normally be under 45, it is actually very possible to get an Aged Exemption for this:

You are aged 50-55. Registered Nurse is in AMZSCO Skill Level 2. Therefore there would be no problem with getting a an Aged Exemption for you. Nurses to tend to drift into doing Aged Care once they are over 40. Plus Australia is so desperate to attract Aged Care Burses that a Nurse with two legs will more or less do, so there is no need to worry about this bit, I assure you.
