Bringing retired granny?

Hi,

 

We are new to the site and I havent seen a post like this one so would love to hear your thoughts.

We have just started out application, we are applying for state sponsorship to SA. My parents are so great with our son and its really sad to think of leaving them but they are happy here and it will be sad but we will just have to visit often. If they decided that they wanted to follow us what are our options? Can we sponsor them?

They wont be working so dont need any work permits and have thier own funds so dont require any benifits although as they are 70 they may one day need some medical treatments (they are both totally healthy now but you never know).

I would just like to know the options if anyone knows them!

Regarding your options, they would be limited but I am not the person to give you the ins and outs.

Once you've had a read through them perhaps you'll have a bit more info and be able to see if your parents meet the criteria for certain visas and have more of an idea of which route you'd like to explore. We have some lovely people posting on this forum who have made great contributions in their replies and hopefully you'll find what you are looking for in there somewhere.

There is also the option of your parents coming over for long holidays on a tourist visa and splitting their time between the UK and Aus, half a year in each or some such.

When both Parents are still alive, the questions are:-

 

1. Will they meet the Balance of Family Test because if yes then they are prima facie eligible for one of the visas with "Parent" in its title. Please see the links below:

There is no point in my wittering about the details of Parent migration if the BoF Test would prevent your Parents from becoming eligible for it, so I suggest that we do this one step at a time.

 

2. If the BoF Test wouldn't work and is never likely to do so then the next question is whether your Parents would be wealthy enough to afford the subclass 405 Investor Retirement visa instead?

Regardless of the immediate answers to the questions above, how much time have your Parents spent in Australia hitherto? If none or not much, personally I believe that people should start by encouraging their Parents to make at least one lengthy visit to Oz, using a subclass 676 Tourist Visa:

My own (widowed) mother now has a Contributory Parent subclass 143 visa which was granted just over 5 years ago. She had quite a few long stay tourist visas before that. Based on my own personal experience with my own mother, I believe that it is important to get the Parents out to Oz for at least one visit that is long enough for them to forget the idea that they are "on holiday." If the visit is lengthy then the Parent gets an idea of what it is like to actually "live in Australia" as opposed to "just visiting," if you see what I mean. If they are only in Oz for 3 months then the temptation is to show them all the sights and nobody in the family really lives a "normal" life for as long as your Parents are out there with you, plus they never really get the chance to feel that Australia is "home."

 

For some Parents (including 12 years of it with my own mother) the BoF Test doesn't work and an Investor Retirement visa would not be affordable. From 1992 until 2006, my mother actually spent most of her time in Australia using a series of long stay tourist visas. For a long time, this was the only possible option for us and then the Balance of Family Test was altered slightly in 2004. I found out about the change in 2005 and we then applied for Mum's CPV. Trust me because I've done it. These "lesser options" work 100% well when there is no other alternative, I can assure you.

You're right. You have described the "perpetual sunshine" option. If the Parents are 65 or over and British, the trick with it is to ensure that they are physically in the UK during the third week of September each year. If they are in the UK during this one week then they are automatically entitled to the Winter Heating Allowance or whatever its proper name is.

 

This money is not a Benefit. It is an entitlement and entitlement depends only on one's age and whether or not one is physically in the UK during the crucial week. Therefore the money can be used towards the air fare to Oz, it seems to me!
