I've been watching the posts on this thread http://www.pomsinadelaide.com/forum/socialising/28397-any-meet-ups-hallett-cove.html and from looking from the outside ,at what seems to me to be an area with a high percentage of people from the Uk ,it still seems difficult get to know other people and settle in.

 

We are looking around the Golden grove -Wynn vales area's ,are there many from the Uk there ,or does it not really make any difference .For people who have been in south Australia for a while,are your freinds from the uk or made more of locals, people you work with ,or have you found it hard to get what you would call good freinds,to say have a day out with ,borrow a cup of sugar or just pop in for a brew or nip down the pub.

 

So although distance traveling to work is important ,are there area's with better social networks in place ,were there's just more going on and more to do,or are your freinds and activities further a field so your always in the car.Maybe your a close family group and don't really care ,so are happy with your own company.

 

please give us a clue what you do when not at work,or if your at home all day, how do you fill your time when not working.

I'm in the northeast and find it a great mix - not too much of any one nationality, everyone seems very friendly, and there are a couple of good pubs! If you do move this way, send me a PM and I'll add your wife/partner to a social group we have up this way - not just poms but a mix of aussies, poms, kiwis, dutch, south african and american - people use the group at various levels, from finding someone to come to the cinema with them, to asking for recommendations for local tradies etc, to organising nights out.

 

People being people, to build up a good group of friends means meeting as many as possible, meeting friends of friends etc, and hopefully among the crowd there will be two or three that you 'click' with - which has nothing to do with nationality, and more to do with lifestyle, hobbies, kids' ages etc etc so everyone will be different

We lived in Golden Grove for our first 8 months here and came across both aussie and english families, although I'm told lots of english go to Golden Grove.

 

Last Xmas we moved south to Hallett Cove (where you also get alot of english) and love being so close to the beach / sea.

 

I suppose it depends what you want from moving here but the beach makes a big difference to our quality of life

Just to play devils advocate - when I (an Aussie) moved to the UK I deliberately avoided areas that lots of Aussies lived in. I felt if I'd wanted to live around Aussies I could have just stayed at home.

 

Not knocking it though, there's a definite appeal to having some friends around who've experienced the move and understand where you're coming from.

I lived in west london for a few years,we used to all go drinking in the redback in acton as is was just a belting pub ,the closest to a northern pub we could find in the area,it was a great pub ,but mainly Oz's and us.

 

I'm not looking for an england abroad ,infact I hoping to blend in as much as possable and for me a big part of moving is to meet new people and embrace the Aussie life,I'm just asking is it easier to settle in an area with a high % of incomers or just as easy or hard were ever you decide to live.
