Is it always this quiet?

Hi everyone,

 

We've been in Adelaide for almost a week now and we're just getting ready to decide on where to settle and find a rental. We've been looking at areas south of the city (Flagstaff Hill/Aberfoyle Park/Bellevue Heights) and we're currently staying at a furnished rental in Glandore (Margarita's Place) but everywhere seems really quiet. It was a literally a couple of days before we saw another living soul in Glandore and, aside from Aberfoyle Hub on Saturday, it all seems ghostly quiet, with no kids around in the playgrounds and reserves and nobody in the suburbs.

 

We've seen a couple of nice houses but we're just a bit concerned that we'll never see any signs of life in any of the suburbs we've been looking. We know it's a bit more lively along the beaches but we have 2 kids so finading a family home and good schools are our main priorities, although we still want to socialise from time to time.

 

Any thoughts anyone?

We are in Hallett Cove and there is always someone about in the parks we go to, also down on the beach (although its a bit rocky)....maybe its quiet about as most peeps seem go to the beach during the school holidays...

The school here also has a good reputation and its Reception to Yr12. There is a good shopping center and its also on the trainline, i suppose it depends on where you need to go for work

Just thought as you are looking pretty much parallel, but inland, that i would mention it,

Its really hard to decide where to settle when you have no ties!!! Good luck with the search and just shout if there is anything you need to know....i will try and help if i can..

All on holiday and either at the beach or camping. Plenty of kids in our tiny park on the cooler mornings but I think things will pick up again once schools go back. Swim Centre and Sports Hall are starting again and I've seen loads of kids (teenagers) out walking or cycling.

A lot of people who come over from Melbourne and Sydney say that about Adelaide. It can be a bit of a sleepy ole place. Glenelg is definitely more lively and the Norwood area has a lot more coffee shops and people milling about getting breakfast and the like. It doesn't help that it is also school holidays because people tend to congregate in the popular tourist spots. You should go to the city (not saying that you should cause I don't like it much at the moment) it is really busy with people swarming everywhere. The Glandore Community Centre which is only a few doors down from you usually attracts people taking their children to play school and various cooking sessions, yoga etc but everything has gone on a bit of a break. :-)

Hi Tim,

Welcome to Adelaide, a complete opposite to the bustling streets of Bristol and its many suburbs,the only thing that is remotely similar is the gridlocked roads, man when it's hot you just want to get indoors, most places are too far apart to walk, I remember the first time I went to the city to the Commonwealth Bank on King william Street, I couldn't believe I was in the city centre, I come from Bath and I was more used to walking up thru' town on the road because there wasn't enough room on the pavements.

Peace and quiet, it's great isn't it...

Funny things is what a lot of people say about England, so I'm not moaning..

the parks back home get vandalised and if your one of the lucky ones, the kids just get beaten up whilst there playng.

get in the car and have a peek around the coast, remember if you build it they will come..

The nature of Australian housing and widespread car use means you hardly ever find anyone walking although the roads are quite busy as everyone goes by car. It is not like England whete most people can walk to a small parade of shops and even if they can here when it os over 35 no one wants to do so. the coast is diiferent and the shopping areas but suburbs are quite. I yjonk most people meet at sports?

Well here in South Plympton there are people walking around, older people walking their dogs, young families with kids on bikes, couples on a let afternoon walk after work..... It depends on the suburbs. Some suburbs everyone works, so it seems empty during the day. A lot of people will be away as said.

There'll be someone at Marshmallow Park from 10am this morning if you want to see another soul!

 

I think the comment about the difference driving is true, the lifestyle in that regard is different. Though I used to live in Glandore (with small children) and loved it, particularly loved there never being hoards of people at Jubilee Park, really safe for them all to play but I usually bumped into someone there and had a good conversation. Depends what you are after but there are more popular parks where there are usually people about.

It is still school holidays hence the quietness of streets ... lot of people still on holidays

 

Traffic, pedestrian and car ..........and general people buzz will get going at the end of the month.
