Work and rental, teenagers and dogs

We have been granted state sponsorship, My hubby is CNC machinist and Tool maker and I am a NQ social worker. He recently applied for a job in Oz but has been told that due to our visa type neither of us will be able to secure jobs until we arrive and that employers are wary as applicants on this type of visa dont tend to stay with them for long when its their first job. Has anyone else found that it has been difficult to secure eployment. like most people these days, the exchange rate and decline in house prices mean we will only have a little money to fall back on when we arrive.

Our children are 14 and 13 and worried about schools, friends and where we are going to live. We are wanting to find rental accomodation in and around Willunga/McLaren Vale, can this be arranged in the UK before we leave or does this need to be done on arrival. I am all for adventure but for the sake of the kids, would like to know that we will have somewhere to sleep when we arrive lol. Will the fact that we have two medium sized dogs hinder our finding good accomodation.

All responses gratefully accepted

Hi

Have a look at the companies around Gepps Cross - I am sure I have seen ads up there for toolmakers and stuff as I drive along Grand Junction Road on my way to work. The only thing I would say is to not limit yourself in terms of area until you have a job sorted out - I have heard of companies not even looking at CVs of those who they feel live a long way from their place of work, and McLaren Vale is a long way south.

If you do end up finding a job that is towards the north, have a look around the northeastern suburbs - excellent schools for teenagers and lots of places to walk the dogs!

Hi

I cant help with regards to your jobs, but we came here on a temp state sponsorship. My husband works in IT and tried looking for jobs whilst in the UK - but to no avail... He got within a couple of months arriving though. Willunga and Mclaren Vale are gorgeous areas to live and they have 2 high schools there. One is a state school - Willunga High http://www.whs.sa.edu.au/ and the other is a private school, Tatachilla http://www.tatachilla.sa.edu.au/ - my girls go there, and I can totally recommend. Although, Ive heard good things about Willunga too.

It is very difficult to get a long term rental before you arrive and Willunga & Mclaren Vale are well sought after areas (they are beautiful) . I would plan on getting a short term rental for a few weeks and then make it a priority to go to all the opens as soon as you get here.

Good luck - it'll all work out!

Hi Trall

Diana is is right there are a number of companies around Gepps Cross in the north. Also In the south there is an industrial area at Lonsdale so I would definitely recommend a look around that area if you like to look of our lovely southern suburbs.

We have 2 large dogs and love walking them over the hills and on the beaches at Moana, and Port Noarlunga and there are a number of dog friendly lead free year round beaches like Maslin beach which is great at the weekend for meeting people and socialising the dogs.

As for rentals It is really difficult to secure a long term rental from the UK and it may take a little longer for you as you have 2 dogs. so I would suggest getting a short term rental then looking for a long term rental when you arrive especially, as you have dogs. There are a number of short term rental companies that now are happy to take dogs but I would also check out that the property has a shade area or better still a pergola to help with the sun and also a fully secure enclosed good size back gardens. I heard of a family that lost their dog a week after they arrived as it managed to get out. Also book early it always makes you feel more relaxed when you know you have the fundamentals ticked off your list. Have a look on http://www.adelaideshorttermrentals.com.au/ for accommodation.

Good luck with all your plans

Kim

I am a time served toolmaker from the UK, also done CNC setter/operating/programming too....there is more jobs in the north than the south depends on what you want from where you want to live and how far your willing to travel to work etc...

Its a bit slow out here right now but if you need any help drop me a PM..

Thanks HG. We are liked the south but are realistic that we may have to go further North. We also liked the 'Hills' when we came over. Allan is happy to travel for up to an hour of the right job/house. I will get him to pm you when he comes home. He is self employed at the moment and working 7 days a week just to keep going :(
