Why Adelaide?

What does South Australia and in particular Adelaide offer that offer places in Australia don't?

 

Everyone I speak to who has visited Australia never have anything interesting or worthwhile to say about the territory and city.

1. It's not miles from anywhere (like Perth)

2. It's not got a climate like Britain (like Melbourne)

3. It's not humid and sticky (like Queensland and Northern Territory)

4. You don't have to pay an absolute fortune to buy a house that's within a half hour's drive of your place of work or the City centre (like Sydney)

 

It's not somewhere most people would choose to go on holiday (which is why most other Australians know very little about it), but it's an excellent place to live.

Thanks for that response, I was getting worried that no one would reply.

 

Any other info would be gratefully reassuring. We are making the big step over from Glasgow to Adelaide and we are struggling to find reassuring positives about Adelaide from friends and family who have been and live in Australia.

We have found the opposite. Everyone we know plus friends of friends etc who have been to Australia and been to Adelaide have said how lovely it was and how much they liked it.

We have 4 kids.Have been to Melbourne,Sydney,Perth and Brisbane and everything Diane said is spot on!!

Adelaide is a lovely city.We live in Brighton right beside a fab beach near the city and Glenelg just up the road.Adelaide is great because within about 20minutes you are in a country environment (which we like coming from Ireland)Adelaide hills are beautiful.Also you have the main Wine Regions here in Adelaide.We are very happy with our choice Australians are generally very proud of their cities so if you go to Brisbane they will all tell you Brisbane is the best!!So make your own mind up we found the cities all very different.Adelaide for us has it all.

In 1989 I spent two years travelling the whole of Australia - no kids in tow, money in pocket from the sale of a flat in the UK (after that property boom), no ties. During this time, we moved on from a place very quickly if we found it boring. First six months in Perth were brilliant. Arrived in Adelaide and lasted one week. Moved on very quickly as it was very quiet and as a youngster, found it very backward. Didn't return during the two years.

 

Fast forward 25 years.

 

Now we have three kids, dog, cat, mortgage, etc.

 

Adelaide was the only place in Australia we wanted to bring our kids up in. They can look for excitement and spread their wings when they get older. Just for now, Adelaide is perfect - quiet, safe and plenty of sun.

Quick answer: Why not Adelaide?!

 

Seriously .........most UK visitors don't get to Adelaide on their first trip to Oz as they do the crocs, the rock and the reef and Sydney.

Adelaide is a small city - for a Scottish comparision I think it's more like your Perth than Glasgow; Adelaide is easy to get around and get to know. It has excellent (and safe) beaches, best wine in the country (small bias coming in there ), nice climate (we get seasons), it has a buzzing cultural life but it's not a big city with endless clubs and bars .............. it probably appeals to families and people at that stage in their lives more than those in their mid twenties.

 

Depending where you are in your life may well depend if you like Adelaide or not.

 

Easiest way to find out ....... come and have a look before making any big decisions.

We have chosen Adelaide because of the Climate and because of where it is for ease of travel, chances are we will probably be settling in the Murray Bridge or Mannum areas because of work but the run into Adelaide will be nice on the Harley,,,,,,,,,,,,very unlike living in Fife.

The only place i haven't been is Darwin and look, all of them have their plusses and negatives but the main thing for me is that, as posted above, you can drive in your car for an hour and be in a totally different place.

 

Sydney Harbour Bridge & Opera House, both iconic, yes

Once you've seen it (or even climbed it (twice) ) it's just there, no different to the photographs you see .

 

My view is that we live in a big town (hardly a city really) and when we go interstate it really feels like a holiday.

If you get lost in Adelaide then you have forgotten the basics . . . . . . .

 

If the hills are to your right, your facing north

 

Beaches are nice and the best way to describe Adelaide is that it is a simple, non-hectic, easy place to live.

There's now't much wrong with Adelaide.I'ts as easy going and relaxed as you will find anywhere.That's what we needed when we came here,and that's what it offers!That will do for us.
