Passport expiry date advice

My youngest sons passport expires 28th April 2013 and we have to validate our visa by 26th April 2013. We hope to move March 2013 - do we need to get him a new passport as I remember someone once saying a passport doesn't expire on it's expiry date (because that would make too much sense) but its 3 months before!
