This is a bit of an aside but why does two years seem to be accepted as the time needed to get a real feel for living here?
I always assumed it was from the days (not so long gone lol) that you could get citizenship after two years. This would mean that people who weren't sure could kind of hedge their bets and get citizenship before returning to the UK.
I don't have a magic answer to what might be the best length of time needed - best of luck to whatever time you decide on - just wondering why two years!
Any theories appreciated :)
To quote Masterchef and all these other reality TV shows 'it is a journey', it will have up and downs, good and bad days, then some really good days and probably some really bad days but no one knows what their journey will be until they start on it.
I think 2 years give you a good amount of time to get over the holiday feel ride through the emotions and get through the ups and downs and get a balanced feel. Anything less then that and in my opinion what is the point. Like I said though, my opinion.
Saying that though, I also totally agree with Jessica Berry's post. We see, time and again, people who just didn't -and couldn't- reckon on how homesick for their 'old' friends, family and life they would be. I guess in the end, there is no definitive time just an individual one.
[QUOTE=lyn;235430]Yes, it is definitely worth it! As many have said already, it's not easy....if it was then many more would do it, I'm sure. I spent many a day before we came in tears worrying about whether or not it was the right decision but we've been here 4 months now and not once have I shed a tear about the decision we made. We're lucky in that we've both found good jobs very quickly (OH before we came and me since I arrived) which seems to be a rare commodity at the moment but if you work at it, you want it and you do your research then it can be everything you dreamed of and more. This website, I should add, is amazing and I've made some great friends out here already through using it!
Great stuff, Lyn! I'm certain you'll have a lovely life in Adelaide -- or anywhere else you might fancy in Oz -- and I wish you and your family well.
You clearly have very positive attitudes and deserve to succeed.
Aussies make the very best of friends, as we learned in the 24 years we lived in Oz prior to leaving in 1993 (for family reasons), as long as you have the right attitude, and it's no wonder you're settling in so well.
I couldn't agree more about wonderful PIA (and PIO); without it, we wouldn't have had our permanent residency restored after a very long absence from oz. We feel so fortunate that we found it in the first place (quite by accident, as I was searching for something else - related to 'retired parent' visas - at the time). What resulted (because of PIO/PIA) was beyond our wildest dreams!
There is a general feeling that when it's good, you'll be nowhere near this site but when it's bad you'll lean on the site for support.
............ and when it is all good and you post these facts there's always someone who thinks you either have your head in the clouds or are totally naive because you can't possibly be that happy/settled ..... Well, after nearly 10 months its still fabulous, we truely are living the dream and there's no way we will ever go back to the UK - we're determined to make it work come what may. (its not all perfect - that's life - but why dwell on a few negatives? - we don't want to be whinging Poms)

We are absolutlely happy...with everything, never had cause to moan about a thing, and the reason we left the UK was to get AWAY from all that was familiar, new country=new stuff, make it an adventure, embrace new stuff, of course it helps if you have a job lined up. Never been homesick at all, all 4 of us love it here, Nursing is better and the pay slightly higher than UK, although my wife says since we came here 4 years ago its deffo getting busier!!!!!Come with a positive attitude and keep that throughout, as they say here, Too easy or No Worries!!!Its beautiful here, embrace it!!!!!!
