Need help when you arrive?

G'day all,

I posted this in another thread a few weeks back but realised that not all potential emigrants would see it. Therefore I'm reiterating my offer here.

Many of you will be arriving here in Adelaide with no one to support you or meet you at the start of your new life in Australia. If you would like me to meet you, and get you to your first place of residence, then let me know you flight arrival details and any other ways in which I might be able to assist.

I'm of the older generation and have lived in the Adelaide area for 32 years since emigration. I'm harmless enough (well that's my opinion :biglaugh:) so no worry there.

Avatar.jpg Call me Doug. I can have a car and trailer to cater for you and your extra luggage when you arrive. No cost involved. I have done this before for friends of friends etc. and am happy to help if I can.

Good luck in all your endeavors,

Doug.

PS, I live in Morphett Vale but will take you where-ever in the Metro area or within reasonable distance from Adelaide.

I'm sure doug you are doing this out the kindness of your heart. For free etc...

But please all, don't be fooled by people over here being helpful, there can always be a catch, no money for nothing over here also, its not like Never, Neverland. Be wise and careful.

Just add to previous. Taxi drivers over here have insurance and public liability etc. Not sure what doug or other "private" car escorts have..?? Taxi's here are reasonable for that one off trip and they also cater for extra luggage (mini van cab) aircon etc...average 20k would be around $45.

Doug, you could meet for coffees instead and give some sound friendly advice over coffee perhaps,??

I'm quite happy to meet for coffee only. From experience, I know how important a friendly face at the airport is. I was lucky in that my parents emigrated before I did. To have landed in a strange new world with no friends would have been real scarey.

If any one would prefer to just have a sign with their name on it being held up over a smiling face, let me know. Your choice as to take a taxi outside, or, take a 5 minute walk to the long stay car park. Believe me, you will want to stretch your legs after your flight.

Good onya Doug, too many cynics in this world I fear.

One other point to consider if you are residing or coming to live in South Australia. This state has one of the highest levels of volunteering in the country. Have a read on this page http://www.ofv.sa.gov.au/pdfs/Econ_ValVol_Factsheet2011.pdf

BTW Doug you could offer your services through the above link they offer a meet and greet service for migrants and are always on the look out for volunteers. They did provide some recompense of your fuel costs for the associated work when I volunteered some years ago.

Again all the very best of luck Doug

How lovely of you, it's so sad we live in such a cynical world where inevitably people are suspicious of kind well meant gestures. I would be interested in help and will pm you over the weekend. Also like the volunteering link, I could really fancy doing that as a volunteer and using their services and also using the info for my prospective career! - I have been in volunteer management for 15 years in the voluntary sector in the UK so this will be another avenue to explore. Brilliant thread and thank you Doug!

I'm with the rest of you - yay to Doug and those like him! We may not need meeting at airport but will definitely need stacks of advice on all those little things that will be different/confusing that you just don't think of/take for granted when in the UK, so its great to have this forum and helpful people like Doug and the many others I've chatted with over the last few months..

I hope that when I'm an Adelaide 'oldie' (and I don't mean that in terms of age!!) I'll be as helpful as everyone else has been to me

I think there is something in settings that you have to make sure is checked. One of the Mods will be along soon to help I'm sure..........

Go into Settings (top right on this page) then choose General Settings - halfway down about on the left hand side http://www.pomsinadelaide.com/forum/profile.php?do=editoptions I think - and check that the option under Private Messaging has a tick in the Save a Copy of Sent Messages choice. You probably will need to delete a few every so often though because your message folders can fill up.

Oh and Doug - what an awesome offer - you're a true gentleman and the world needs more like you!

Hi Doug,

What a great bloke you are! And I have found so far in my 5 weeks of being here that you are not alone - people are so welcoming & only to happy to help out.

It is so refreshing that people offer so much & expect so little in return.

All the best to you

Zoe

Douglas - there should be more people like you!

Strange how the offer of a service for free is viewed by some people. Oh well if we were all the same the world would be different!

Now where's that basketball........

I agree I think that Doug's offer is generous and it is rare in this day and age.....but I still hear my parents telling me of "stranger danger" and can't get that out of my head.

If Tyke were offering a free pick up I'd be worried too :biglaugh: but for other reasons....he'd probably bore you silly with his fishing adventures.

Don't mean to take anything away from Doug, I just personally am cautious until people prove themselves or unless comes recommended. I think the coffee idea is the way to go.

PS - I like the basketball comment too

But Kris we are all strangers. At least Doug isn't asking for money, I've known property owners demand money up front then when the family arrive there is no property and they have lost their money.

There is nothing stopping Doug picking people up from the airport as long as there is no charge.

Doug you are a lovely person and seem very kind and thoughtful.
