Time left on passports

I have heard you should have a year left on your passport when migrating, is this true, My youngest sons passport runs out April 2014 and then my other children and mine run out in July 2014, why do we need to have so much time left on the passport, is it worth renewing all of them here before we leave the UK (probably late July/Aug this year).

Any help appreciated

Would be far cheaper to renew in UK before you leave that's for sure.

I would renew before you leave just for the sake of it, I renewed mine before Xmas and it cost me $295! I think it's just standard as you need 6 month to travel to Europe is it..
