Couldnt agree more Diane! The job market is so tight here at the moment and looking at those occupations that have been added....seriously?????

 

My daughter recently applied for a job (which she got!) with over 200 applicants...i was in the supermarket the other day and heard a lady saying she had just been for an interview for a position that had 170 applicants...

As someone who personally works on databases - are they seriously telling us they can't get someone locally to do that type of work??? it's not exactly difficult for goodness' sake! I reckon plenty of ex-Holden workers, automotive engineers, manufacturing engineers and soon submarine builders could pretty quickly retrain!!

It seems pretty bonkers, though fresh migrants means $$$$$ for the state gov and as it's totally up the migrants to find work, I guess the SA gov aren't really risking anything! Some of those jobs do require specific training or knowledge - with Database Administrators, for example, it would take some significant retraining to learn the skills to be able to plan and manage a MS SQL or Oracle environment. I agree that the state gov should be re-training people though, that's the responsible thing to do, though it's easy for me to say that now I am here.

Some people wouldn't want to retrain or will take too long for them to learn the skills to perform at a top level, but I reckon that there are DBA's that would get to SA and will start a different career path as they only will use their profession to enter the country.

Fully agree. Was reading something about this just last week where the question was posed to some academic or other that given the state of the SA economy why were these occupations being added (they were talking in particular about hairdressers and cooks). His reply was that many higher skilled/managerial/executive occupations haven't attracted applicants in the last couple of years so the net is being cast wider. If that's to be believed it means the list is no longer (if it ever was) about skills shortages but about filling the quota of migrants places. That makes it simply a money-go-round, not a response to shortages.

Database administrator is a highly technical IT role that can require some specialist programming knowledge - it's not just working on them like the administrator part of the title implies.
