car shipping??

Hi,

Have seen a thread on the pros and cons of car shipping. But has anyone on the forum shipped his or her car to Adelaide.

If you have could you give some ideas of the costs involved, and also can you ship any personal belongings in the boot of the car? This would be good for us as we have an Astra estate car and not much stuff to ship.

cant help much with prices on car shipping(allthongh we want to take babe and Betty our 62 bug and 72 camper with us)was interested though in dyl being a motor mechanic,do you have work to go to? are you the one the visa is based on?without sounding to nosey how have you found getting work??..P>S aint it hot here at the mo?

To ship a car it has to be absolutely spotless - top and bottom - were told by someone that used to export cars and she said Oz was a nightmare to get a car into! My OH (mechanic) has also been told that cars imported from the UK have major paintwork problems - the paint starts to flake because of the heat here - don't know how long it takes though!

We have just purchased a 2005 Astra Wagon CD - $22500 + GST + stamp should you wish to make a cost comparison.

we looked into shipping our car but it was going to be more expensive to take it than sell it here with all the duties and stamp fees attached to the car. You definately cant put anything in the car or boot. and it has to be cleaned ++ in the UK.

Hi,

 

We went to a seminar in Leeds yesterday and there was a shipping specialist there, he told us that unless it was a classic ( such as the bug and the camper) the import duty makes it too expensive to ship cars. Also even if you do decide to ship you have to watch the make of car as parts may be difficult to get hold of it the make isn't popular in Australia.

We also looked into taking our 3 yo Volvo estate as we know how expensive they are over there. The taxes and duty made it too expensive to even contemplate.

Hi, nice to meet you, no Dylan doesn't have a job to go to we are just going to go over and hope for the best!! The visa is based on him (motor mechanic) and not me. Will keep you posted if anything happens on the job front.

 

P.S. It's lovely, hope it lasts all summer now!!

I looked quite seriously into taking my car and I'm still not convinced either way, over here my car is worth about 3K it will cost about the same again to pay duty and cleaning costs etc, so I'd be looking at £6-7K thats 12K Au$, ish, now for 12 thou out there I can buy myself a 12 year old s*** box that will need a lot of work. mine is a 6yr old Focus, mint condition and low mileage so even with the heavy duty and cleaning involved I feel it's worth the risk as I will run it into the ground if I need to once there as I do not have a float to dip into to buy myself another one, it's an argument i've not finished with myself yet, if my car was only 4 years old I would have done it without an argument but by the time i'm ready to go it could be another 2 years, then it won't be worth th hassle.

 

Also i spoke to importers, they told me that they build a frame around the car and you can fill your stuff around the box your car is in and ship it all in one go, this stops the need of having to put anything in the boot, it's a bad idea to fill the car as they will be looking for any signs of dirt etc.
