Passport validity?

Do any of you guys know if your passport has to have a minimum amount of validity when your visa is issued?

I should think you would need a minimum of 6 months? But if its going to expire in the next few years you would be better off renewing it now

It is my understanding that when you apply for your visa you need 2 years left on your passport. When you get your visa and have the stamp put into the passport so long as it is 'in date' then that is fine. If your passport expires before you validate its not a problem. You just need to carry both your new and old passports with you on entry. Once there you can call into your local DIMIA to have your visa label transferred into your new passport. This isn't possible from the London office.

Thanks peeps, OH passport runs out in 2 years and just on the verge of applying for Visa so thought I should check.... think he will renew it now!

Renew it now while in the UK it is much cheaper than doing it here through Canberra, also thtey dont put the visa in the new passport so you will need to carry two.
