Citizenship Question

Recommended Posts

I am having a baby! :jiggy:and I have just been invited to my citizenship ceremony (a few days before my due date.) My partner is Australian.

Will my baby be a dual national like me if I take my Aussie citizenship before he/she is born? or will they only be Australian?

I would like for them to be able to freely travel/work in the UK if they choose to. So wondering if I need to delay my citizenship if that makes a difference to them.

They will be Aussie by birth regardless (Aus father for starters ;) ) and you will be able to get them a UK passport. It's pretty straightforward to apply for a UK passport once you have the AUS birth certificate and anything else required for the application :) You'll need your UK passport and birth certificate iirc. You can read up on it on the UK Gov website. All UK passport applications go via the UK now.

You can hold dual nationality and it won't affect the UK one for your baby. And they can hold 2 passports fine. Lots of people hold both without issue.
